"Coach G makes it so easy for you to want to work hard for him. He’s knowledgeable and believes in you when you don’t believe in yourself. He will push you too your limits, limits that you didn’t even know you had. He is the most passionate person I have ever met when it comes to rowing. He loves the sport and knows it from top to bottom. He could talk for hours about his past experiences and you can tell when he does tell stories just how much the sport has done for him and that he genuinely knows, cares and wants to be there. He can make practices fun but also knows when it’s time to focus in and block everything else out. "
"Coach G knows more about the sport than anyone that I’ve ever met. He single handedly walked in this year and set a new standard for our steady state numbers, and our team has not swayed since. The team’s quality in numbers and passion has been drastically different this year due to his inspirational talks and motivation. However, he does sugar coat things and during the spring season, he hyper focuses on his boat. His positivity can come off as disingenuous because it is incessant. Overall, though, he is the reason I’m the rower I am today."
"He definitely knows his knowledge when it comes to rowing but he lies to rowers and sugar coats everything and can be very quick to place blame. Also favors people that kiss up to him in a way that I have NEVER EVER seen before. Also never asks us about our personal lives and seems to just look at us as numbers "
"Coach G is a great coach in the sense that he is incredibly knowledgeable about the sport. He’s not the most honest person. If you go ask him what you can do to be out in a better boat he will tell you he’s considering you and thinks you should be in a higher boat but then nothing like that ever happens even if you do everything you need to. He definitely picks favorites and sugar coats things when you ask for an honest opinion. He is great at motivating and keeping team culture positive, but sometimes is only concerned with just his boat rather than the team as a whole even though he acts like he cares about team depth. He also doesn’t do anything if an athlete brings something negative that happened on the team and he ignores it usually if it’s someone in his boat. Overall a good coach but these things make some of us rowers feel overlooked and put down."
"Coach G is very passionate about rowing and is very knowledgeable and motivational. However, he sometimes is so passionate that he becomes irritable and difficult to be around."
"I have had overall great experiences with coach G. He is insanely knowledgeable about the sport and is constantly telling us stories about his experience and will often get on the erg with us or talk about how he wishes he could go out on the water with us. Sometimes he gets overly excited or anxious about racing and can come off a little harsh but he doesn’t ever mean harm. He helped to bring more positivity to our team and show us a love for the sport that we had been lacking in previous years. "
"Coach G is by far my favorite coach I have ever had. He cares about his athletes and he knows exactly what the boat needs and when. I truly believe the reason the 2V has become successful this year is because we have Coach G. He motiavtes us and he is incredibly knowledable about the sport. He is honest and tells you the truth in a motivating way to want you to be faster. The boat that he coaches is always high in energy and is ready to go because of his style of coaching. I think that he is truly the best coach. I am so luck to have him as my coach and I think he makes a team sucessful and he is a key part of the progress that Kansas has seen this year. I am apperticative of him and I think if you are debating on coming to KU it would be worth t just to be coached by G. Another positive is that he rowed and coxed so he knows what he is talking about! You will always hear him say "ahh I just want to jump in that boat and row" he connects with the athletes on another level that I have ever seen before. "
