"I can’t say enough good things about Coach Hovis. She is consistently there for those on the team both inside and outside of practice. Coach Hovis acknowledges academics, athletics, mental health, physical health, and much more. You can tell that she is rooting for you in every race as if it was her in your seat. She is also extremely knowledgeable, so the best in this sport at KU that I have seen have been developed by her after coming to the program. Coach Hovis can be a tough love coach at times, but you never need to doubt that she is wanting the absolute best for you. "
"Coach Hovis is one of the best coaches I have ever had in all of my years in sports. She is very passionate about supporting the well-being of her athletes. She understands all aspects of being in a sport and helps guide you through the years. She is very tough on you but in a good way and only wants to see you succeed. She has been one of the only coaches to develop my love for rowing and actually support me in the Kansas rowing program. No matter what she does not make you feel invisible and actually gives you corrections to make you better. She is one of the best coaches you will experience in the program and very easy to get along with if you do all the right things!"
"I easily think that Hovis is one of the few coaches at Kansas who cares about athletes in a genuine way, including those who are not in her boat. Some others have a tendency to flat out ignore athletes who are not in their boat. I have never felt as if Hovis was talking down to me, ignoring me as an athlete on her team, or playing favorites. Unfortunately these things are problems at Kansas today. She isn’t everyone’s favorite, but most of us agree that she definitely cares about the athletes on the team and is interested in our actual wellbeing."
"Coach Hovis made me want to be a part of the team. She is easy to talk to and communicate with. She cares not only about athletic performance but also about your interests beyond rowing. "
"Not extremely gracious when it comes to mistakes. She is intense, especially when it comes to novice rowers. It’s hard way to be introduced to the program sometimes. Very knowledgeable but doesn’t always explain her thought process and that leaves inexperienced rowers to fill in the blanks as far as seatings go. Overall an effective, but intimidating, face of the program."
"Coach Hovis is the best coach I've ever had. She is so passionate and knowledgeable about the sport, and has a talent for making us fall in love with the training and racing. She believes in us when we don't believe in ourselves, and our performance gains reflect that. She works with the newcomers and 3v8, and her athletes have consistently been high performing in their racing divisions and go on to become phenomenal upperclassmen with her training base. She also works so hard behind the scenes to make sure the athletes are completely cared for, such as by scheduling our healthy meals and ensuring no one feels alone. She builds our team culture by being relatable about her experiences as a collegiate rower, keeping high but realistic expectations for excellence, and creating a welcoming environment for all. I would come to Kansas all over again just to be coached by her, she completely changed the trajectory of my rowing career."
"Coach Hovis is one of the best coaches I have ever had. She truly cares about performance on the water and off the water. She is intense and passionate, and will not hesitate to push you to your limit. Despite this, she can be a shoulder to cry on, and is always there to catch you when you fall. She is genuine and caring and will crack a joke at the drop of a hat. She is observant, and knowledgeable, and does not hold back on telling you what she thinks. She cares about her rowers as people, and pushes you in all the right ways. She is the perfect balance of everything a coach should be. "
