"McPherson College WSoc went downhill the moment Mark took over. Off the field he was a decent guy, and his family is great- but as a coach… smh.
Between the berating, the constant eggshells you have to walk on, not knowing if it was going to be a “good day” or a “bad day”, it was a lot- mentally. He had people who he “favored” and they would tell him everything that happened outside of soccer to the point where they basically LIVED in his office. He would throw markers at us if he thought you weren’t paying attention and would scream at you. If you went to talk to him about the fact that he was splitting the team and turning us against each other he would turn it on you and tell you the team was splitting because of YOU and he did NOTHING wrong. Not to mention when a goal fell (because 2 of the girls (his favorites) who moved the goal didn’t lock the wheels) on one of my keepers at practice and he didn’t even stop practice to make sure she was okay, and he never checked in on her and she had a fractured back. Then there was a time when my teammate got a DEFINITIVE concussion during a game and he told us not to tell our AT or we would have consequences. I’m sure I’m forgetting stuff, but that type of coach kills your love for the game, and it’s sad.
The team culture was very much “out for yourself”. Teammates would be talking to you about a situation just to get information on you to tell him about it. There’s no team spirit, no passion, no pride in the badge. "
