"Coach Shotwell is the current PE and lacross coach at my school. She has made countless kids want to complain but i will say mostly evreyone is to scared to speak up. IN the past 2 weeks i have cried for an hour and she refused me to the clinic. She made us sprint a mile and kids threw up almost fainted and she did not do anything about it other then saying its our fault and we are not breathing right. My expirience was not being able to stand eyesight surrounded with black seeing stars pluged hearing and nauesa. I have told her what i felt and insistead on me to keep running. Some kids were not able to walk so they fell and she made the rest of her team run doubles which was so un fair because that ment they could not even get a water break. We also have a girl with docter diagnosed knee problems. Her mom has sent countless emails saying she should not even be running the mile so for sure not sprinting. This girl her knee twisted and she fell in the gravel and the coach questioned her falling the laughed. The poor girl had to be taken out in a wheel chair. And she does have knowlage on sports but the whole physical eduacation thing is not happening. She made me question evreything to the point where im to insaccure to step on a volleyball court. She does nothing but point out what you are doing wrong. And instaed of saying good job its do this or do that. I have scored an ace and she said that i did it wrong hoe i would have ruined the team if i missed anyway. This coach rather the motivates dicreases confidents in her players. SHe has shown me nothing but doubt in myself. And i get coaching but this is straight horriable. So many kids have gotten injured thrown up or just hated their sport after their class. I have a friend that was on the varsity lacross team as a 6th grader and she has scored so many goals bit instead of congradulating her she brought her down. Later we are going to go ask people around about what they think and their expiriences with her but this is what we have so far. " she asked if i was really on the volleyball team". " she really said and this is why we start with begginer level". " I had my cupcakes and thats what we call our period so that she knows we dont swim and she made us say it which made uo feel very uncomforball near the boys". And this is just a few of the many many raesons why we dont want other people to go threw this"

"I currently have Coach Melody. She has been putting us in a living hell and does not care about our health. She has made the kids throw up and not stop. I sprained my ankle and was crying for at least an hour, and she refused me to the clinic. In this past week, 30 people just from her class have been to the clinic. She's rude, picks favorites, and holds a grudge. We don't want anyone to experience this. She is a PE coach as well, and she made me lose my love for volleyball by making it all just what she wants rather than us learning how to play."

"I have Coach Mel as my coach now, and honestly, I can understand why I have heard that she was fired from past schools. She runs her players into the ground and acts like taking care of your health means you are being weak. If you take one break, you can run doubles. If you take too long to run, you can run doubles. It feels like no matter what you do, there is always another punishment waiting for you. What really bothers me is that this is not just about being tired or having a hard practice. There have been situations where girls were clearly hurt or exhausted and still were not taken seriously. One girl sprained her ankle and was crying for around half an hour, but she was still made to run. Another girl literally fell into a hole because she was so exhausted, and instead of making sure she was okay, she was told she could get some ice and take a breath before continuing. A girl being injured, crying, or struggling to breathe should not be treated like she is just making excuses. The worst part is that Coach Mel and her CO made 11 kids throw up. These are 12- and 13-year-old girls. I understand that sports are supposed to be challenging, and I understand that coaches want their players to be in shape and work hard. But there is a huge difference between pushing athletes to improve and pushing them past the point where they are physically sick. Making kids throw up should never be something a coach is proud of. A coach is supposed to care about their players, not just their performance. We should be able to tell a coach when something is wrong without being scared that we will get punished for it. We should be able to take a break when we genuinely need one, especially when we are injured, sick, or completely exhausted. Being a good athlete does not mean ignoring your body until something seriously goes wrong. This does not feel like normal tough coaching anymore. It feels like our health and safety are being put second to conditioning and punishment. We are kids. We are here to learn, compete, improve, and love the sport—not to be pushed until we are injured or throwing up. There is a difference between making a team stronger and hurting the people on the team. Right now, it feels like that line is being crossed."

"After a recent job interview where HR asked me what challenges I have overcome to prepare me for the professional world, Coach Melody came to mind. When in college in a small bubble, surrounded by friends and lacrosse, she always instilled in our team that the real world, would present challenges and things always would not go our way. We had some players on our team that would complain about playing time and how hard things were and then have their parents email the AD, but majority of us knew thats not how the real world works and our coach always reiterated that hard work pays off and playing time is earned in practice. She prepared us for hard, she made the level of standard rise by challenging us with concepts that we eventually became successful at, with our own dedication towards it. What we thought was hard a year ago, now became easy when the task was given to us. By making each of us stronger people on and off the field, Im so grateful she was my coach because she’s right, mommy wont get you a job and she wont bail you out of hard life situations as an adult, and her prepping us for the hard, real world, has paid off. "Coach Melody always brought positivity and knowledge to our practices to elevate our game. She would constantly explain the why for each skill or drill and demonstrate multiple times how to do things for those who were behind. Of course we would repeat drills and skills if we weren't doing them correctly so we could improve as a team. There were many on our team that did not belong playing in college lacrosse because of their low level skill and dedication to improvement but that was beyond her control since she walked into a team she did not recruit in the beginning. College Players are expected to be able to catch right and left, cleanly scoop a ground ball, dodge, shoot and much more. My college career was fantastic and would play again under Coach Melody because real recognizes real. Hard work was awarded and drama was left at the door. Keep doing what you are doing Coach Mel, clearly its working! "

"I still have Coach Melody as my coach, and she does not respect her players. She often tells me to demonstrate skills I have never been taught or performed before. She regularly calls players out in front of the group and tells us to “do better” without explaining what we did wrong. If one person messes up during a drill, we are required to start over completely, again with no clear feedback or instruction. While she does have strong technical skills, her coaching style is extremely intense and discouraging. If you are looking for a practice environment where you can learn, grow, and feel safe making mistakes, I would not recommend this coach."

"Well, I waited to comment until after a few months to give this a fair shot and fair comparison. The AD had a hard time attracting applicants and what they chose was a men lax coach who has never coached women’s lax. There is a distinct difference between men’s and women’s and during fall we practiced and ran plays the men’s way. There is NO team unity, bonding, community involvement and I only see my teammates on the field. The vibe feels more like a college club sport when before, even though we are NAIA, it felt like a D1 or D2 program. I guess that was too intense for some of the players that didn’t want to be a part of a competitive program. Our winter workouts are a joke and I know half our team didn’t take it seriously so this is going to be an interesting season. Before we used to get complemented on our overall stamina and being in shape- I think all things competitive have gone down the drain. It feels like this new coaching staff is just here to check the boxes. "

"What I learned most about Coach Mel is tough love. She taught us at the real world isn’t easy and she prepared us for such. She taught us that we are only as strong as our weakest link and not only did she raise the level of play for the best players on the team, but she spent a lot of time focusing on the weaknesses of the rest of the team to increase the level of play for all of us to compete at a very high level. Her knowledge in the game is above any other coach that I have experienced through many prospect camps and club teams. She would always bring innovative ideas, concepts, and situations to prepare us for everything that a game would throw our way, we knew exactly what was going to happen in each game because she prepared us not only with film study but situational events she prepared us for in practice that our opponents would bring. We learned to know that easy wouldn't prepare us and we bought into challenging each other and holding ourselves and teammates accountable for our efforts and actions. After graduating under Coach Mel’s leadership, I have learned that the real world in fact is very cut throat and the weak do not survive. She was able to give me a great reference to get my dream job and I have stayed in contact with her along the way because of her great advice for life not only on the field, but off the field. "As a player, I had a great experience being coached by Coach Melody. She brought a positive vibe and energy to each practice as well as higher level concepts that other teams didn't have. Since she is a college ref, she taught us the game inside out and how to play to the rules which gave us that edge. She was always planning fun things for our team to do outside of practice to bond, my favorite was the ropes course! Her first year I was skeptical because she didn't have an assistant coach, but we won the conference and flew to Detroit to compete in the National Championship. That says so much about her organization, communication, planning and professionalism. Most teams have 3-4 assistant coaches, but I respected the work she put in, to ensure our college lacrosse experience was positive and valuable. Miss her! "

I was a sub my first year and then worked hard to get playing time my second year. She was always motivating, reached out to check in on me and was always positive towards my growth and journey in the game. "As parents, we sent our daughter to SCAD because of Coach Shotwell. The program was very unstable prior to her attendance with 4 coaches in 4 years. What she was able to do in her 3 years of rebuilding, was phenomenal to watch. The roster was depleted and with what she had, she made lemonade by changing the culture to what a college lacrosse program is supposed to be. On many occasions she held my daughter accountable for her effort level and actions, which is what I expected for her personal growth away from home. Players were continually praised for their efforts and dedication with things like Queen Bee on Fridays or post-game, which my daughter was so excited to call home about. Our family also enjoyed watching how the program would give back to the community in many different ways because being an athlete, is much more than X’s and O’s. Coach Shotwell really developed them to be great women off the field as well. As an alumni now, she still talks about the positive impact she made on our daughter and still reaches out to catch up. Thats the sign of a great leader and mentor. Best of luck to Coach Shotwells next team, SCAD Lacrosse will never be the same without her. "

"No one is missing Mel on the team! In fact we are all talking about what a pleasure it is to have a new coach who is not playing head games with us and abusing our bodies by running us into the ground. Mel never took anyone to the doctor's in fact she would require us to go to the urgent care if we missed on day of practice for the common cold. She was delusional thinking it was a family feeling on the team. I would hate to be in her "family" if she treated them the way she treated us. Of course she had he favorites which she would go party with and even allow those players to come to practice with hangovers. But god forbid someone had an injury/surgery she would question their loyalty to the team. There was even a time when she would make players wear choke collar if they messed up just to belittle them. Mel should never be allowed to oversee young ladies growth and development again. The truth shines through her that she is abusive and has no respect for the players! "

"Our current team really misses Coach Mel in every aspect. Her knowledge for the game inside and out, her passion to make every practice different, fun and competitive and her thoughtfulness to plan team bonding and fun activities at practice to build our team chemistry, continue to make lacrosse fun and get us all thinking about the game from a different lens.. Our team chemistry this year isn't the same, we are lacking that family feeling she created on our team and we connections on the field which has us playing timid. She truly cared about making our college experience enjoyable and now it just seems like we are just going through the motions every day to get through practice and some of us dread going now. Our team is not as fit as we were under Coach Mel, which has us worried for our competitiveness this season. She held us to a high standard and really understood what each of us needed to be successful on the field and our hard work paid off!! "As an official for Coach Shotwell’s team on many games in her career, arriving to the field, our crew knew that we would be reffing a clean and safe game because she was a student of the game and always knew the rules inside and out. Her players always had that competitive edge because of her deep knowledge and dedication in the game. Many games, her team would be drastically the better team, but they never blew them out by running up the score like every other team would do; they intentionally avoided scoring which taught all players at the game a better lesson. I witnessed her team even give their opponent, hand written letters after a game or engage in a post-game prayer with the opponents. She coached her players to play with class and to honor the game. Her captains always spoke to the officials with respect and thanked us for being there and she was always respectful to the officiating crew while coaching. It was always a pleasure to work her games and she will be missed, but know the grass is greener where she will end up! "

"This is a really easy review. Those that are invested in the team prospered. Those that were there to just go through the motions did not. The ones that “went through the motions” are the ones that were constantly upset about their position on the team. If you don’t put the work in, you don’t get paid. Coach Shotwell certainly had favorites. Her favorites were the ones that showed up early, the ones that did more than she asked, the ones that didn’t skip reps behind her back, and the ones that what team success above their own success. I witnessed a few selfish players on this team. People worried about their own statistics and their own playing time, not seeing the big picture of something greater on the horizon. That small handful of players was enough to ruin something that was on the verge of a championship. Good luck to Coach Shotwell, wherever you land. As for the rest of you, hopefully you learn to work as a team instead of against your team. "
