"He is good at logistics and maintaining established routines and has some decent qualities as a person. Besides that, he severely falls short as an adequate head coach. He lacks the capacity to create a culture of trust between himself and the athletes because of poor coaching and decision making when it comes to race preparation and lineup selection. He does not address rowers' technical shortcomings enough to the point where they will make substantial improvement. He does not use well-known procedures to select lineups nearly enough or early enough in the season to give the team a chance at real success. Technical development and advocacy for proper lineups come from the athletes, not from him. This means any improvements the athletes make happen because of themselves without help from him. These behaviors have wasted the time and potential of several classes of athletes. For this program to have a real chance of success, the school should select a new coach and remove Mike Irwin. "
