"I enjoyed Steve much more as a person than as a coach so this review is hard. Great guy, awful coach. For starters, I was never convinced that Steve really knew what he was talking about - or at least that he knew more than I did. For the two years that I played for him, he gave me one critique. And every single match I played, that was the reason for everything that went wrong. Imagine how frustrating that is, that no matter how hard I focused on it, or tried to fix it, it was the only feedback I'd ever receive. This wasn't just me, he did this for every player on the team. Everyone had their one thing. To me, it just seemed like he didn't get to know us, as players and as people, as well as he should have. He had to default to this one thing he knew of us every. single. time. Secondly, Steve is a very funny guy with a very laidback personality. Which is great, at times. This is more something that I would want in my best friend, not my Division I Varsity tennis coach. I think about the great coaches I had growing up and realize that they were all stern. All very nice, loving, supportive people but were demanding of me and pushed me to be better. Steve did not do this. For instance, when I played for him, he could barely run a lap around the court himself. He was struggling with his own health, and cared very little about ours. And subsequently this made me lazier and care less about my own physical health. Last, Steve had one rule: don't be late. Which I totally get, being on time is an important trait to have in all aspects of your life. But Steve has a no excuses, no bullshit, no nothing approach to it. Which is an extremely annoying thing to deal with - especially since he did not care or have any rules about ANYthing else. Life happens, shit happens, and sometimes no matter how hard you try, it's not your fault. I personally feel like he was ridiculous with this and there were MUCH more important things he could have used that energy towards (to name a few: work outs, diets, our focus during practice, our schoolwork and class schedules) than if someone showed up 1 minute late once in their entire career."
