Old School Mentality Poor Communication
"0/10 recommend I will not call this man a coach. He is anything but. As a matter of fact, with the way he treats women, it’s hard to even call him a man. The old boys club mentality does not fly in 2025. *********************************************************** It has become apparent that at least the last 2 seasons under Zach Shaver have been a train wreck for the majority of female athletes committing to play at LCCC. To add salt to wounds, admin just looks the other way after many reports of his abusive and unacceptable behavior. Apparently they think wins constitute a successful program rather than the welfare and mental health of the players. How do they allow this? Where is the accountability? How do they not put the girl’s best interest first? *********************************************************** Each season has seen at least half of the roster leave because of the appalling behavior and coaching style of Shaver. He is not a coach, he is a BULLY. These girls did not leave because they “aren’t tough enough” with a “tough coach”, they left because they were smart enough to walk away from an abusive relationship. Walking away from the deplorable situation was one of the bravest things they’ve done to take a stand for female athletes everywhere. (Feel free to go examine the rosters yourself and you will see the turnover trend). *Feeling the effects of abuse is human, something they were not allowed to be under Shaver. *********************************************************** Shaver made sure to berate, manipulate, and break down the girls, so that many thought that it was normal for a college program to run like that and also feared for their future and the repercussions if they spoke up. There is nothing okay about a man in a mentor and leadership role demeaning, constantly yelling, controlling, and stripping girls of their self worth everyday. There were many times he shamed them in front of their teammates. And for what? To gain an unnecessary power hold over them? He gets right in the faces of athletes and uses his large stature to physically intimidate them, often caught on film at games and yet nothing is done. *********************************************************** Shaver is not a decent human being, more like Jekyll and Hyde. Don’t let his recruiting persona/charm fool you… he will put on the mask of the caring and gentle coach and then flips on the monster switch the second your signature is on your LOI. Ramping it up even further the moment you step foot in his gym. He recruits young women with good character, good work ethic, and trusting dispositions and shatters their confidence. Which in turn left many losing the love of the sport they’ve worked their whole life at. He accomplishes it by attacking them personally rather than actually coaching and mentoring them. That is abhorrent, shameful and quite frankly pitiful. *He even encouraged gossip amongst teammates and manipulated captains/teammates to be in on his twisted mind games. *He places unrealistic physical and academic demands on the girls and makes tons of promises he doesn’t keep. He holds them to standards he doesn’t even come close to keeping himself. *********************************************************** Have I said manipulative enough yet?? How admin, booster club, and others in the community sit back and watch this man publicly berate and abuse the players and others (including calling refs names and belligerently swearing at them) without holding him accountable is beyond me. And it was only worse behind closed practice doors in a very toxic environment and culture. If you think you witnessed some of it at games, it was a hundred times worse behind the scenes. Even coaches and players from other schools pulled girls aside and apologized for his inappropriate behavior and checked to see if they were okay. No tally for a win on the record books will ever be more important than a human being. These young women deserve better. Do better LCCC. *********************************************************** The writing is on the wall…. It’s time for Shaver to go. Admin needs to step up and do the right thing for current and future girls playing volleyball at LCCC. A 4 game suspension was not enough for whatever secretive hold you have on keeping him around. This is not about vengeance or ill will, this is about protecting young female athletes from incompetent and predatorial bullies like Shaver. He has no business in the gym with our daughters and stealing not only their confidence, but their mental health and love of the game. *********************************************************** If you think this is long, it’s just the beginning. "I almost selected “intense” only because there’s not an option that says “abusive”. I also chose one star responses only because I couldn’t submit it blank. Shaver is a horrible coach. His demeanor when he is recruiting players is completely different from who he really is. He is abusive and manipulative and has absolutely no interest in the athletes on his team as people. His only concern is wins and he uses abuse and intimidation to achieve that. He has destroyed my daughter’s love of volleyball in one season. He also uses intimidation and name calling with refs and gets away with it. We need to put a stop to this type of coaching."
