"Do not come to Michigan rowing. Mark is probably the most unqualified for this coaching position. He does not care about the team as a whole concerning the athletes, he just cares about who will kiss up to him the most. He is hypocritical and does not have a method at all to his coaching, how he makes lineups, or how he has the team train. He has wasted a lot of potential and put athletes through mental agony, making the sport someone once loved become a chore, toxic, and not fun. He doesn’t rely on numbers or seat race results; instead he will choose someone slower essentially (2 of my teammates won their seat races and then were sent home after Big Tens). It is devastating and frustrating to witness and personally experience the failure of a team he has created due to his incompetencies. He has let down the team and many talented athletes in so many heartbreaking ways that is unacceptable. Compliance doesn’t care either. No one cares about women’s rowing. They are hypocritical. They don’t want to change anything or listen to our feedback. Very poor leadership. Toxic culture. Do not come here. You will be very unhappy. Go somewhere else. Trust. "

"Possibly the most manipulative person I have ever come across. There were 13 freshman one year and only 3 graduated without quitting. He creates a scary team culture where he pits people against each other. He once said that I had too small of hands to play (he recruited me) I have over a dozen stories of him going out of his way to put people down and intentionally degrade them. He knows the sport but would never recommend anyone to ever play for him. The biggest regret I have from college is not quitting sooner once I witnessed his fake disingenuous nature. He took away everything I loved about the sport. Goes out of his way to make people feel bad about themselves. Would never recommend to anyone "

"If I could I’d give him no stars for anything but motivational. All he knows is how to give a semi good team talk and organize logistics. He does not know anything about soccer, refers to the same 3 tactics he knows. Which consists of kick the ball away, how to win a header, then not to be a fake tough guy. Constantly lies to players, doesn’t matter how bad or well you play he has his team and he is so stubborn he’s willing to lose almost every game and have the worst season in Michigan mens soccer history. She cares a lot about body image and will put you down if you don’t look like the ideal athlete. I struggled a lot with mental health and that did not seem like something she was willing to help with instead she just made me feel worse about myself."

"Our daughter's biggest concern about playing water polo for Marcello was she wouldn't get a lot of play time. She was recruited by many other Division One schools and offered a full ride with them, but she chose MI because he sold her on it. She learned the first week she had made a mistake. All he did was mentally abuse her making her feel inadequate and out of place with the rest of the team. We put our girls into athletics to improve their self-esteem, but all Marcello did was destroy our daughter's. He has no business coaching anyone."
