"I don't think he has the emotional maturity needed to be a head coach, much less a good or great head coach. In my opinion, a good head coach leads by bringing out the best in people. They highlight strengths (athletic, interpersonal, academic, etc.) and promote growth in areas that can be developed. Good head coaches are also very self-aware. They are aware of their own strengths and build a team around them round out weaknesses. IMO- all of this = resilient program. I did not experience any of this under Mark's lead. It was unfortunate, because I thought SO highly of him and wanted to believe he was this wonderful, well rounded coach who cared and wanted to build something great. Mark seemed to 1. highly favor people who could score a lot of points and do exactly what he said at all times without question and 2. have no tolerance for anything else. You were a thorn in his side and his vision, and any other qualities about you did not matter. You will get pushed out, ignored, under-coached and over-punished. 3. Arguably worse, he only seems to hire people who think exactly like him and fire the rest if they haven't already been pushed out. This is all the making of a fear-driven, authoritarian program. That will not lead to program success nor will it help athletes succeed in any part of their life. Please don't waste a special time of your life dedicated to a program headed by someone who needs to grow up. I wish I didn't. "

Intense Knowledgeable Cares About Academics Fitness Is Important Old School Mentality

"Massive ego, emotionally manipulative, and body shames. Times are changing, she refuses to accept any critics from players AND her own staff. Only holds herself accountable when it is convenient for her… For example, Coach Shelton will have a minor error maybe being a few minutes late (extremely rare) or just anything that is technically punishable but irrelevant to the grand scheme of things she will then announce that she is wrong and punishing herself; therefore, we are to believe if she has made a mistake, she will omit and fix it. However she will never hold herself accountable for large errors that effect individuals/the team as a whole. On a positive note she is exceedingly punctual and expects the same of players, the (extremely) high standards she holds players to definitely helps later in life. Overall, I think she could work on being more compassionate and cut out gossiping about her own players (current and former). "

"I have never encountered a coach at any level that contradicts the philosophies that he preached on a daily basis. He had an uncanny ability to swindle people into believing he was of the utmost character and fully invested in his players both on and off the field. He was the least approachable coach I have ever had and ran his program like a dictator; he shunned players for no reason; he held grudges based on whether or not he liked that player. He is the worst example of a coach I've seen."
