"Not a good enough coach for the UAA. Bain lacks strategy and doesn’t know what to do with his team other than yell and curse in timeouts. Comes off as a good guy when you first encounter him, but he is highly insecure, and it shows in how he treats his players and his inability to coach in-game time situations. Brandeis players deserve better."

"Hard to sum up in a few words how inept he is as a coach. He can’t even remember the out of bounds plays he puts in from one day of practice to the next. His teams will always be mid-tier."

"Playing in the UAA can be an excellent experience, combining strong academics with high-level competition. But families considering Brandeis should take a hard look at this program’s reality before committing.
In 2025–26, under head coach Jean Bain, the team showed early promise and appeared to be a legitimate contender in conference play. Brandeis was in the mix early on. That makes what followed even more concerning. The team didn’t just cool off—they collapsed, ending the season on a six-game losing streak and showing clear regression at the most important point of the year. Once things started to go wrong, they did nothing to correct the downward slide raising concerns about both leadership and adaptability from Coach Bain.
This wasn’t a talent issue—the roster was capable. Instead, the offense relied too heavily on two players, became predictable to opposing defenses, and the players were visibly worn down. There was no effort to adjust or manage minutes resulting in close game losses that were avoidable.
Off the court, reported issues with negative team culture, disorganized practices, lack of accountability, and favoritism point to deeper problems. These directly impact player development of the younger players on the roster and the overall experience of everyone involved.
The 0–6 finish underscored a bigger issue: when opponents adjusted, Brandeis didn’t. Bain was outreached and outsmarted at every turn.
Families should approach this program with caution. Look beyond recruiting “talk” and consider the past season results, lack of team culture, and roster turnover as real indications of what you’d be getting into. At this level, success requires structure, accountability, and strong leadership—areas where this program currently falls short compared to other UAA or NESCAC options."
