"Coach Josh Laux exemplifies everything a student-athlete and family should look for in a college soccer coach. His commitment to developing young men both on and off the field is second to none. He has built a culture of excellence, accountability, discipline, and family while consistently helping players reach their full potential as athletes, students, and leaders. His tactical knowledge of the game, ability to build meaningful relationships with his players, and dedication to their long-term success make him one of the most respected coaches in college soccer.
One of the most important things parents and players can understand when entering the college recruiting process is that collegiate athletics are different from youth sports. Playing time, opportunities, and roles within the team are earned through dedication, work ethic, attitude, and performance. Coach Laux has created an environment where every player is held to a high standard and is expected to earn their place through commitment and continuous improvement. That culture not only develops better soccer players, but better young men.
If you are looking for a program with a structured team culture, a winning mentality on and off the field, and a coaching staff that emphasizes accountability, persistent dedication, and measurable growth, Randolph-Macon is a tremendous choice. Coach Laux has established an outstanding soccer reputation while leading a program at a college that is equally respected for its exceptional academic reputation.
Any player who has the opportunity to compete under Coach Laux will benefit from a program that prioritizes character, hard work, achievement, and preparation for success long after their playing career is over."
"Misleading and overpromises! Recruits WAY to many guys every year. Guys may not make it into the portal, but as a D3 - you can just transfer out to a different program if you like, but some just quit soccer. The guys do NOT respect him at all - In fact most think he is a joke. I thought he cared about his guys, but as time goes on, he does not give it what he did when he arrived. The culture of the program is declining. HE only cares about winning only - not the players and they feel this.
Players get NO training gear - they must return shirts and shorts at end of the season, I mean come on - this is college!?!?!?!"
"Let me first say that Coach Laux is a great recruiter! He really makes a player feel special during the recruitment process. He was communicative at that time. He made our son feel very important - like he was THE main player he was trying to recruit and would be his #1 incoming Freshman, even promising him a starting spot as a Freshman. I was present for these conversations so this isn't just a kid hearing what he wanted to hear. My son felt that this was his opportunity to go somewhere he was wanted and would play. Coach even drove 2 hrs to see my son play at high school games. Constant texts to my son that he hoped he would choose Macon! Fast forward to the Fall of this Freshman year, little to no communication to my son about his playing time or why he was not playing, let alone starting. When my son inquired what he needed to do to earn his time, no real answers were provided. In speaking with other parents of teammates, it seems this is the coach's move. Recruit strong, promise the world, then hope they stay. It is like he keeps kids on stand-by in order to have a strong practice squad. He definitely has favorites and plays those players without trying to help the others continue to improve. Needless to say, there is quite a bit of turnover with him. "
"Top level coach who can develop players. Excellent understanding of tactics. Cares about his players on and off the field. Took over RMC in 2015 and inherited a program that was habitually bottom of the ODAC and consistently missing the conference tournament. Has won close to 100 games since taking over which is close to double the amount of wins the program had over that same period before he arrived. Coach Laux is a players' coach and a master at developing personal relationships. He has rescued RMC soccer because the program was in shambles before he arrived. Needs more support from the administration to take program to that next level. The team has a nice locker room but the field is a mess and rumor has it financial aid is inconsistent year to year. 5th year seniors at competing schools hurt a little because RMC does not have grad school but the program continued to have
winning seasons despite having very few 5th years. The guy is a workaholic and gives the program everything he has. He also graduates players and has had almost zero players in the transfer portal. Top notch coach and person. Needs more support from top down . "
"Personally creates a divisive atmosphere among team
Team generally does not respect him .
Does not maximize playing opportunities in the spring
In ability to handle his 40-44 field player roster
Undisciplined team In the field no consequences .
Misuses talent cannot coach in the mid or front third.
No exit meetings with players in spring or fall .
Has had talent but hasn’t won a playoff game in five years and last season did not make pLayoffs
Most kids are good kids on this team and they work hard but sometimes coaches mistake activity for achievement
