"Phoebe is a tough coach, but a fair one. She and John care deeply about their athletes, and I am so grateful to them for making me who I am today. Phoebe is truly incredible, and pushes people to their physical limits - but Brown recruits rowers who can handle it and who want to win titles.
She can seem tough as nails on the water, but I can promise you that whenever my teammates or I needed support, she would show up for us.
If you are looking for flowers and roses, the Brown boathouse (and championships) are not for you. "
"Puts rowing above all else and has complete disregard for anything academic/career related. With athletes putting in a mandatory 2-4 extra hours each week (not logged with compliance) , Phoebe has no regard for mental health or wellbeing. She has put crews in dangerous situations on the water and needs to reevaluate her coaching methods. Even long after my time at Brown, I look back on the treatment of my teammates in complete disbelief. Brown Women’s Crew is no longer the empowering force it once was and I am in shock that student athletes and Brown Administration are still letting this behavior go unnoticed. "
"During her latter years coaching at Brown, Sara Carver-Milne created team/athlete divisions. She was notorious for picking favorites, and she rarely developed or cared for athletes who showed potential and promise but were not the super stars. This in turn affected team scores, rankings, and overall team morale. She did not seem to have positive relations with university, and the contention affected her decisions. Sara was hesitant to advocate for better facilities--program had no pit for practice. Gymnasts' parents had to pay for out of conference travel. Many gymnasts retired early from the program unhappy, beaten down, and broken."
"So far he has been a very intense coach that wants the best out of me at all times. Effort is very important to him and he will work with you to get the most out of you."
"Cares more about his title than doing his job. Really doesn’t seem interested in fencing or coaching. Is very interested in talking about himself and taking pictures of himself. Kind of a waste. And he doesn’t care if our team is good or not. Recruits from his own club with fencers who are mediocre. And double-dips by having Brown pay to use his club for practice. No work ethic, no ethics in general. Zero people skills. "
"Agnes Miller is my favorite coach of all time. She is not only the most knowledgeable coach when it comes to proper technique, she truly cares about her athletes. "
"Coach sara was great at developing me and my team. She spoke to us directly on what we needed to do to improve ourselves inside and outside the gym to become better gymnasts and better women for the future."
"Brown has a beautiful campus that has historic buildings as well as amazing facilities! I really enjoyed my time as I was shown around and was told all about browns history and facts."
"The Boathouse is newly renovated, and looks clean and fresh. However, it doesn’t feel like the top their space you would expect with a team as successful as Brown"
"Rufus goes above and beyond any expectations for an assistant coach particularly in his knowledge of recruiting and training. He is also a great communicator which makes him so good at his job"
"Coach Ripa really doesn’t care much about fencing. He’s more interested in himself than anything else. This guy is a major egomaniac, and really doesn’t want to work hard. A huge disappointment. "
"Sara could be very knowledgeable and direct in her leadership when meeting with people one on one. However when addressing the team as a whole, often did not rise to the occasion. "
"A great change from the old coaching staff. I am very confident he will reinvigorate the program. Personally, he has helped me to bring back my love for football after having a terrible freshman year under the old staff."
"If a player should be punished for breaking team rules the severity of the punishment depends on how much that player plays. Two players who played a significant amount of time and one player who did not violated team rules the same exact way and the player who did not play that much of the time was sent home while the other two were unpunished."
"Jill stuggles to develop players. She depends on incoming freshmen to set the team ahead and make an impact on the field. She is unreceptive to feedback and lashes out when players voice their feelings/opinions. She develops strong relationships with her 'key' players and makes others feel disposable. She loves the game, but lacks people skills."
"Coach Short is old school in her ways. Brown has had a losing season for many years regardless of the talent and depth of the team. She makes irrational coaching decisions and plays blatant favorites. She makes random position changes/subs. She does not communicate well with players on playtime and coaching decisions.
\
However, she really cares about her players and their well being and is very understanding with academics and conflicts. She's a great lady- just not a great coach."
"Very skilled coach and a relatable person. His coaching methods are not right for everyone, but when an athlete isn't improving, he will meet with him/her one-on-one to figure out a solution. He is a dedicated coach and a caring person."
"Coach Estes is a great coach who brings out the best in his players. He and his staff prepare them to play hard-nosed, physical football. He embodies Ivy League sports through his expression of a commitment to both athletic and academic success, noting that "Brown isn't a four year choice, it is a forty year choice". He is a coach that his players want to play for because they know he cares about them not just as a football player, but also as a person."
"Playing for Coach Mercado has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my college career both as an athlete and a student at Brown. He and assistant coach Trent Calder have created a great team atmosphere based on hard work and accountability. Felix does a great job of being serious when he needs to be, but also manages to keep practices fun and engaging. Brown Men's Water Polo would not be what it is today without the leadership of Coach Mercado."
"Eileen Ghent was extremely caring and would do anything to benefit the women's lacrosse team. However, being apart of women sport's, at times she was put in difficult situations in which she had to make decisions that would be best for the team as a whole. For this reason, some lines were blurred, feelings hurt, etc but with what she dealt with, she maintained a strong demeanor that tried to be neutral in each situation."
"Jill is such an enthusiastic coach who is passionate and beyond knowledgeable about the sport. Her practices are often productive however at times i find she gets ahead of herself and forgets the current level of skill on the team, and forgets to work on the basics before trying to imply a greater concept. She has definitely become more easy to relate to since I have been at Brown, she's become more comfortable around the players which makes it easier to approach her and ask for help."
"Agnes is extremely knowledgeable and a talented coach. She genuinely cares about her athletes as people and wants to take them to the next level athletically. "
