"Currently working exclusively with the sprinters. Appreciate his positive attitudes about the student/athlete dynamic. Really felt like he put the students first."
"They say first impressions make a difference and truly this was true with our meeting with Coach Schmuhl. Schmuhl met up with my high school T&F athlete and I to learn more about the program at Case Western and to tour the facilities. Schmuhl was down to earth, treated us with genuine interest in who we are and listened with true attentiveness. We listened to his coaching philosophy and how it changed through the years. We liked how he isn't afraid to adapt and learn from other coaches and specifically targets training athletes that would maximize their individualized performance. We liked hearing how this Coach has a healthy perspective on the pressures of his Athletes to balance rigorous academics, supported in a positive peer supportive culture."
"Talked to head coach and recruiting coach. Both were very nice and welcoming. Indoor track facility stood out to me but the indoor track and outdoor track are on opposite sides of campus. "
"Horrible the only reason he isn’t the worst coach I’ve ever had is because he is not abusive. Of course to be abusive would require some kind of effort and interest in coaching, which he is not capable of."
"A lot can be said about Doug, in general he’s a good person who cares about your well being. You can talk to him if you are having trouble with someone and he will listen but don’t expect him to actively do anything. That being said he’s not a great coach, sets often lack direction and he can not run a taper at all. I’m not sure he knows much about swimming or is willing to put in any effort so if you are looking for a highly technical coach look elsewhere. In my 4 years at case I never once received stroke advice from him. He is not the worst coach I have ever had because he is not emotionally abusive and generally cares about athletes metal health. However he is prone to picking favorites so treatment is wildly different between athletes. Before going to swim for him think long and hard about your personal expectations and goals."
"Doug’s a nice guy, just doesn’t care. He got lucky with recruiting the past couple of years, however, the team will not continue to progress with him. He creates a very toxic team environment when it comes to roster selections and expects his captions or single, inexperienced assistant coach to do everything. He plays obvious favorites, lets his personal life get in the way, and bullies his assistant coach. This team has an extreme amount of potential, however, is greatly limited due to Doug’s incompetent coaching and leadership. We desperately need a new coach."
"Good person. Terrible Coach. Will not take suggestions unless it makes his job easier. If it requires any effort, Doug will not do it. He will not motivate you, or critique your technique. Doug’s coaching job is passive income"
"She picks favorites and spends most of her energy on those and disregards the rest of the divers. Can be rude and not very encouraging. She’s a nice person overall but I do not believe she genuinely cares about some of her divers. "
"Doug appears to be a nice guy, but unfortunately doesn’t know very much about swimming. He is unorganized and wants his assistants to do all of his work and creates a bad team moral."
"Lack of knowledge. Poor management. Lack of appropriate attitude and team culture. Manipulative in bad ways. Takes no responsibility. Passes work onto others. Emotionally immature. Non-confrontational. Unmotivated.
He is a fine and decent person. Terrible coach at the end of the day. "
"Doug is a very good guy and very accessible. He cares about his athletes and wants to see the team succeed. Unfortunately, I do not think he is the most knowledgeable coach ever. He is usually open to suggestions, especially from people on the team he likes, but the practices are average and will require some additional work if you want to continue to improve. At the end of the day, it is Division III Swimming, so I don’t expect to have Bob Bowman coaching me, but Doug could be better. However, much of the team enjoys using Doug’s mediocre coaching as a scapegoat for their poor performance despite putting in minimal effort, so don’t be fully swayed by more cutting reviews."
