"Coach Padilla is a great guy, but he is super intense and he's always on your case, which makes sense since he's also the "mediator" of the team and academics."
"The only thing this person personifies as a coach is the title. Believe me I wish I could say more positive things about her, then maybe the young freshman and sophomore athletes that tried their best for her and their school would still have scholarships that was promised to them. Their scholarships were based on the status of performance, academics and character. All of which was achieved. Unfortunately because she did not recruit them and for no other reason I could see and none was offered by her to the players she did not renew their scholarships. One young lady was even the freshman player of the week in their league several times! Another freshman she dismissed actually was near the top in scoring against ranked teams! It’s unfortunate that no leadership in the athletics department intervened. There were several upperclassman leaving and she had plenty of scholarships available besides cutting freshman.
What was the coach like? I’ve been told by her players that she is very unapproachable, does not let them know what they need to improve, benches without reason.
Style? See above.
Memorable story- Freshman comes into a game that had not seen much playing time and lights it up, so much so that the announcers can’t say enough about her. She continues to play the next few games admirably against some ranked opponents. Then is benched after an off game. Sees decreasing playing time thereafter and after finally asking what she needs to do to get more playing time is told only “don’t worry, you are doing fine”.
What is that? A new way to promote self esteem and confidence? Some type of seldom used technique for motivation?
Team culture, if shuffling players around as if drawing balls in the lottery, not communicating any type of strategy, instilling uncertainty and unrewarded good play can be a culture she perfected it.
It’s unfortunate the school and the NCAA allows this type of behavior. I feel so sorry for the underclassman that were not allowed to continue with a university that promised them an education as long as they did their best. This person holding the title of head coach should be ashamed for what she did, so should the university for allowing her to do so. The only consolation is that the University will get what they paid for, unfortunately that doesn’t help the players who’s scholarships were not renewed.
I am writing this experience not only for them but also for those players that may be considering playing for this person. If you have other options, they are probably better."
