"I had Julie at the University of Iowa. She is a great coach and very knowledgeable. She cares deeply about her players and will go the extra distance to help them weather its extra training sessions before or after practice or helping players with just about anything. She really gets to know you as a person and not just a player. Great coach and would 100% recommend!"
"Blames players for her failures as a coach. When she does not get her way she plays the player. She turns players on each other and is mentally and emotionally abusive. No school will ever gain with this coach amount their team. "
"From what I witnessed firsthand; Josh is the first person to directly speak poorly about athletes behind their backs. He cares about your time, your place, and the team's position on the board. I have seen him blatantly ignore athletes when they do not perform to his standard, I have seen him laugh at an athlete while having a panic attack, I have heard him threatening someone's scholarship if they do not physically recover from an illness. He does not believe in injuries and truly thinks that the high amount of training he prescribes with no recovery, mobility, etc. is going to lead to healthy individuals. He has allowed the diving coach to remain under him, as she herself, is mentally abusive and controlling. I believe Josh has potential to be a good coach, but he is not a good person. "
"Julie Hanley should never be a head coach again. She is disorganized, disrespectful, emotionally abusive and has publicly been accused of psychologically abusing her athletes, by the entire team. "
"Josh is by far the worst coach i’ve ever had. he made my love for swimming go away. all he cares about are times, and outside of the pool you are nothing more than a number on his roster. he coaches through the use of fear and often makes athletes feel guilty for normal everyday things. not only does he only care about times, but he preaches that he cares about our mental health which is far from the truth. the girls here at isu are amazing and i met some of my best friends there, but from a head coach perspective i will never forget how he treated me and stole the love and joy out of swimming. "
"Worst coach, especially as a model for young women and the game! Is anything but honest, shows favoritism, and knows limited strategy for the game- look at her record. Her ego is bigger than her brain and she creates drama and a toxic team environment. "
"Doesn’t know the game; assistants run practices. Will not make you a better player. Fawns over her favorite players in front of the team, but even her faves can’t stand her. Caused a mutiny several years ago then blackballed those who went to the AD. Character counts? Lol. If you survive your experience and still love the game, consider yourself lucky. "
"On a personal note, Josh was a highly influential figure in my life, and is still a great mentor. He helped me through very difficult times in college (in swim and in life) and I will always be grateful for that. "
