"creates poor team culture and puts athletes down without celebrating many successes if you are on his bad side. Injury group is made to practice separately from the team and treated extremely poorly by constantly being scolded for “not wanting it” and being”lazy” for being concerned about their health and listening to doctors. It is a common experience for girls to leave meeting or practices in tears."
"Justin turned RWR from absolute dog s*** to a respectable team. I will never disagree with his ability to do that. He talks in circles and knows how to beef up what he is saying to make it sound better when in actuality he is a professional at making most people on the team feel insignificant. Unless you are a v8 contributor your importance in his eyes diminishes. In my time on the team, he would speak about how he valued academics yet would berate you if you missed a team lift or had to leave 5 minutes early from practice for a lab or an internship opportunity. It’s truly disappointing to see the value he places on athletes from a mental health perspective and how much he devalues your physical health as well despite the number of resources the university has. "
"Mean and degrading. Horrible at communicating and picked on players. Pitted teammates against each other. Not respectful and a poor leader. She should not be coaching/mentoring anyone. Her track record in terms of how she treats the players is the same at each school she has coached at; just plain and simple, a horrible coach and her husband is even worse (who coaches with her)."
"This coach was a bully. She should be leading young women. She was degrading, manipulative, back stabbing and just plane mean. She has no business being a coach."
"Justin is incredibly motivating and has real goals to make us the best team possible and to make sure that every single athlete is included in the growth and development of the team. "
"There are two major complexes for all the teams and they have EVERYTHING! Team lift room is amazing and I take advantage of the classrooms too for studying "
"Coach Zarb is a fantastic all-around coach. He genuinely cares about and prioritizes health outside of the sport and while he is incredibly knowledgeable, he is also open and responsive to feedback."
"Tends to talk in circles. Becomes confusing, but is very motivational and only cares about the team. Very grateful for the opportunities we are given. How hard you work picks your place on the team. "
"She is absolutely terrible. She has a fun time playing mind games with her players, ask any of the alumni and they will tell you the same thing. Her ego is so big, the team's best interest is not in her mind but rather proving a point and making everything about herself. "
"She’s truly a great coach who cares about your overall well being. Not incredibly intense when it comes to workouts but knows her stuff to make shorter practices more effective. "
"Okay person, horrible coach. Players are never put first. Lacks basic soccer knowledge and is too old school for the growing intensity and popularity of the sport. "
"Justin is definitely very knowledgeable when it comes to the sport of rowing. He has very particular goals in mind for the team when it comes to standards and pushing ourselves to get a little better every day. "
"Justin is all about consistency. He is dedicated to having all his rowers act as leaders. He communicates the plan he wants us to execute well and goes over a better way to approach it based on the results. He is intense yet supportive and encouraging which is crucial in such a mental sport. "
"Coach Sami gave me an opportunity and I am forever grateful. She had high expectations and I am glad she was stubborn to them. Now that I am older I appreciate the directness and honesty from Coach Sami. I always knew where I stood with her. "
"She is a good coach. She really wants the best people but she may not be the best basketball on court person. Changing things on the fly is not her strong suit, but she is good at keeping one solid game plan. "
"I am so grateful to coach Sami who helped me through a difficult time in my life. All the staff have given me so much and I will ever be grateful. Her no-nonsense approach was refreshing. The previous coach manipulated and lied. I never felt lied to or manipulated. I wish I had all four years with her. "
"Love coach sami and staff. The bad ratings came from bad teammates and bad parents. There is evil and this world and I'm glad those players and families are gone. My parents are greatful too. Coach sami and staff have taught me so much about myself and life. I know she cares about me and can depend on her for the rest of my life. "
"Coach Sami pushed me to be a better player and person. She really cares about the players. She really isn't a coach for everybody. She is only for those who want to better themselves. She is not good for players who do not love the game and who is not a team player. I unfortunately played with some of those and wished i would have told coach sooner"
"Worst coach I have ever had during my softball career. She ruined the game of softball not only for me and also my other teammates. She would pick favorites and talk badly behind a players back to other teammates. She was emotional and extreme. I would never recommend a player to play or be coached by Sammi Stinz-Ward. "
"Coach Elliott is a wonderful coach. She is willing to give you her to you all if you are positive, work hard, and communicate with her. I would say she is the most positive NCAA Division I coach in America."
"Justin is extremely knowledgeable in the sport and has turned athletes into elite rowers and coxswains. Being said his methods have created an absolutely terrible team culture and this past year over 16 girls have left the team. He often will say hurtful things to try and motivate athletes such as “when I look at you I see us losing Big Tens” or straight up telling injured girls they are simply “lazy.” Many girls struggle with mental health issues and are often penalized for taking a step back from the team. Injured athletes are totally separated from the team and are given little support. The entire coaching staff is not very approachable and most interactions are like a business transaction. Justin is responsible for creating his lineups for the top 2 eights, but the rest of the staff creates lineups and places rowers and coxswains purely off of opinion even if you won your seat race. When asking for answers athletes are told they lack in “competitive spirit” or something else dumb. If you’re looking for a warm and fuzzy environment with an open door policy this is not it. Went to a lot of sports psych when I was there."
"Loyola Marymount is a cool campus! I really liked my visit there. The coaches seemed nice and took me on a tour around the facilities and the actual campus. It's quite a spread out campus but I wasn't opposed. The academics are good. "
"Lack of technical knowledge and guidance during practices hindered our progress and development.
The coach failed to motivate the team and often exhibited pettiness, leading to a decline in athletes’ passion for the sport and causing many to leave. There was a mismatch in passion and maturity, with the coach lacking the necessary leadership skills for a Division 1 team.
The coach showed a lack of care and empathy, often blaming athletes for sickness or injuries. Organizational skills were poor, with training plans nearly nonexistent and communication being consistently subpar.
Honesty was lacking, with unfulfilled promises regarding equipment and even providing incorrect regatta dates.
Overall, the coach’s shortcomings affected the team’s progress, passion, and trust."
