"Craig Engels, on the website Tempojournal.com, was quoted to say “Back in NC State, it was more like run hard every day and if you break, you break, but if you don’t then keep running. Unfortunately, so many people get injured because of that…”
Someone I know was recruited to run for NC State and was treated horribly from day one by the coaching staff. I’m being careful with my words to avoid anything self-identifying, but you should know that the program does nothing to stop a culture of hazing, and that I personally witnessed Coach Geiger in a lie face-to-face to a parent of the athlete. In short, the culture of the XCTF program at NCSU nearly ended the athlete’s career. Thankfully, the athlete left the program and went on to have a successful running career including conference championship victories and world championship appearances. The NCSU XCTF program is toxic- and the issues extend deeper than Geiger- Coach Henes is complicit in many of Geiger’s actions and should also be avoided."
"This coach is all about winning. He’s not about make an all around student athlete. He will do whatever it takes to win and hurt whoever he has to. You will only a couple a chances to prove yourself and then your done. He partial to players that just want to player over and above thier 20 hours a week. And players who want to go pro. He yells, cusses and makes the players a nervous wreck and humiliates on court "
"Rude assistant coach; unrealistic expectations of players; very controlling; no flexibility… doesn’t care about your education tennis comes first over academics"
"No positive reinforcement. Exceeds practice hours. Doesn’t care about becoming good person, winning. Good recruiter, but not knowledgeable. Tells every player they will be pro. Not honest . Makes threats !
Assistant is rude and abusive "
"Harold is by far one of the most caring, knowledgeable coaches in the Country. He cares about you as a PERSON before an athlete. I'm lucky to say he's been a coach in my life long after my time as a student-athlete. "
"In my humble opinion, I do not think that Coach D is a very good coach but he does bring in great assistant coaches to make up for that. He is knowledgeable about the game and gave me the opportunity to play on scholarship but those are the only real positives I can say. Does not connect with players well and has made some shady moves/decisions."
"I’ve been with Braden for years now, and he is one of the most passionate and caring coaches I know. He will put a leg out for any swimmer in his program, and he deeply cares about the athletic, academic and social life of each swimmer. I am able to go to him for any reason and he will always try his best to help. If I could write more, I would"
"Braden is a good man. Intense, but fair. The atmosphere he has created at NC State is second to none and I'm very thankful for being apart of the dynamic rise of the Wolfpack. College swimming is challenging no doubt, but Braden and his staff do their best to make the experience enjoyable and memorable. They are the best in the business."
"Braden is a well-rounded, prioritized, and balanced coach. Any athlete under his staffing is bound for improvement in the pool and out. He creates such a great atmosphere with high expectations. "
"He was a great player but I don't think he is a great coach. I don't think he understands how to coach females or how to create and enforce a successful team culture. Overall he is a great person off the field, but not the best coach "
"Coach Earnshaw has made a lot of his players unhappy during his short time coaching at NC State. He is not a good leader or role model for the young women coming in to play tennis."
"Coach D has issues. He's not a players coach like everybody thinks he is. He's not a personable coach at all. He's the type of coach to talk to certain players and go out of his way to do so but for other players he just walks by them like they don't even matter. If you want to talk about favorites oh my god! He is the king of favorites! It's funny cause if you look back at our records for the pass 3 years we really haven't done that well and his favorites were playing haha."
"Rollie has been coaching for many years and is an expert in this sport. That is why I trust the program and think he is an amazing coach! He is so passionate about this sport and his runners, it's truly an honor to run for NC State."
"Coach Findley is the best coach I ever had. He is not just your coach in soccer, his coaching style shapes you as a person and benefits you in your whole life."
