"John creates an environment where everyone is involved and everyone’s voice is heard. Always making sure that we have all the resources and allowing us to grow together as a team has really impacted us to grow not only as players but as people."
"Seba’s role as an assistant coach focuses on fitness and load management. He is a great person to be around and has a good balance of being serious and light hearted. He is very thorough with his fitness plans and has high expectations from his players."
"Great coach. Knows how to prepare and train young athletes to reach their most potential. Very kind and understanding which allows the athletes to come to him for help and guidance. "
"John is not a bad coach, but I’ve definitely had better. We had major communication errors, but he always knew what to say to just barely keep me holding on. Could lose his temper on you, but will try to right it the best he can. I don’t recommend "
"Jenna has been a great athletic trainer despite being stretched so thin with work/school commitments. Very organized, very knowledgeable, and has helped me on and off the field "
"Jess has turned out to be one of my favorites. I am very grateful for her. At the end of the day, there’s no harm no foul- whatever happened at a practice or game happened. We move on "
"Even though Ali was a volunteer coach she was very dedicated to our team. She knew how important the game was but always reminded the team to have fun. She spoke with me on a personal level when times were tough and never gave up on me "
"Seba is also the strength and conditioning coach and he does a great job at making workouts that are fun but also are helping you get better for your sport. "
"Paula is very accessible to reach, many athletes have her number handy to ask questions whenever they arise! She is very responsive and will always get back to you. "
"John is both a great coach as well as a great person. You get a sense of how much he cares for his players on and especially off the field. He is an extremely understanding person and truly wants the best for all his players. Practices can get pretty intense but that’s why he is such a great coach, as he really pushes you to be your best."
"Ali is a volunteer coach yet she still consistently shows up to games and practices. She is very easy to relate as she played in college and knows what we are all going through. She gives great advice about soccer, but also about the mental part of the game. She really cares about each individual and isn't afraid to give her advice when needed."
"Coach Jess is newer to this team but she has really grown into her role. She will joke around with you off the field but expects the most focus from you on the field. She is very knowledgeable of the game and is always there to help you make even the slightest of changes. She always knows how to create a competitive yet fun environment during practices."
"If you are a person of color looking to play volleyball, this school is not for you. This team is not a safe space for PoC athletes and even female athletes in general. Firstly, Hoffman is noticeably harder on his PoC athletes compared to his white ones. He also has made racially insensitive comments while interacting with his players. Moving from race, though, he also preaches mental health but once a player expresses that they’re struggling mentally, he undermines it. Adding on, he is not a coach that is good at taking criticism. He will ask for it but don’t bother giving it because he will go on a tangent about how what you’re saying is wrong and how he is doing things is right. Hoffman is also does not hide his favoritism, choosing to keep athletes on the court the he likes over ones that will actually turn the tide of the game. The team is also becoming less and less diverse throughout the years as some of the new players share his ideas and have said some insensitive stuff to/about PoC athletes. He has also made misogynistic comments about staff members that are assigned to help the volleyball team."
"This coach made his athletes feel like they are stupid and don’t know anything. He exploits all of our flaws and DOES NOT care for his athletes. He doesn’t know how to coach and can’t even make separate workouts for those who are injured. "
"John will always tell you how it is. He will be honest and tell you straight up. But that’s what makes him an amazing coach. He’s always putting time in for his players because he cares. His life is dedicated to the game. Amazing coach overall "
"John is a very caring, passionate coach. He always puts his players needs first, and would do anything for his team. John knows the game well and I have learned a lot from him. He is intense at practice because he wants his players to continue to get better and grow and learn. "
"Bryce is easy to talk to and does his best to help out with any injury that you have. He’s always available to answer and injury related questions you have. "
"I always appreciated ali hall’s opinion. She was a volunteer coach yet showed up a lot to practices and games. She played college soccer herself so I always took her opinion and advice seriously. "
"Steph is alaways cheering us on at our games and welcoming to all new athletes. She will hear you out if you have any problems or concerns with the program. "
"Jess knows so much about the game of soccer. She is really funny once you get to know her. She makes the environment very positive and friendly, yet intense. She expects the world out of you and won’t accept anything less. I have become a better player because of her and head coach John. "
"Jenna is extraordinary. She will go out of her way to make your needs met! She helped with any injury I had minor or major. She should be a trainer at a D1 school like Stanford one day. Absolutely adore her as a person. "
"John is one of the best coaches I have ever played for and one of the most caring people I have met. Off the field he will be your biggest fan and will always be there to help you no matter what. On the field he isn’t afraid to tell you the truth but that is only because he wants to see you reach your fullest potential. John expects a lot out of his players both on the field and in the classroom. And if you aren’t reaching his expectations he will be the first person to help you figure it out and get on track. John has completely turned this program around from where it was when I first started. The team culture is very important and he makes sure that we all stick together no matter what. "
"SFSU has older facilities and wouldn’t necessarily be exciting to a visitor. Film is done in classrooms. The weight room is an old shed. The training room is limited. Because athletics dont bring in much money, not much money can be allocated to athletics. The environment itself makes up for the facilities, however. If the sport and academics take priority to you, then SF State is a great place. If facilities and accommodations mean more, then it likely won’t be a good fit."
"John DeMartini was the best coach I’ve had I and can easily say that he makes players feel heard, seen, and valuable. John cultivates an environment that measures success by who you are as a human being and how that translates to the field. He also makes a D2 school, feel D1 when the facilities can’t match it."
"I’ve really enjoyed have manuele as my coach, he is a very caring and authentic guy. He will put in the effort you put in and spends the time to create an individual relationship with you."
"Before I became an SFSU athlete, my official visit was very fun. The team took us around the city, we went to one of their games, toured the facilities, and learned some insider information. Everyone was welcoming and gave helpful advice for freshman year."
"Jenna is the best trainer, she is dedicated to the athletes and does everything she can to keep you healthy. She is easy to communicate with about injuries and helped our team stay in great shape during the season. "
"He can come off as very intense and direct but he cares a lot about the program and the well-being of his athletes. He makes it aware that if you ever need anything you should always reach out. "
"She really knew the fundamentals that we needed as a team. Takes a minute for her to open up to you but when she does, she is a great person to be around. "
"I was here for 3 years and going from a D1 school to here was definitely a change. You have to account for the typed of sports offered and how much the school makes off their athletics. If sports aren’t that big or that popular then money will go elsewhere. "
"It's a compact workout gym that has a good selection of equipment. Every team takes turns using it throughout the week, and there is always a trainer on deck. You get to meet other athletes and have a good time with your teammates while working out. If it is missing something extra that you need, you can always go to the new gym that's for all the students and faculty. "
