"Sonia Curvelo is not a players coach. Her main drive is winning a conference title but she has a difficult time inspiring or developing her team. She'll pit players against each other to try and get a desired result out of one person at the expense of another. Like most coaches, she has her favorites and does not put her best 11 on the field. Her skilled players are often on the sidelines in favor of speed - even if the speedy players don't have a good first touch or keep the ball inbounds. Her assistant coaches do not have a say in anything so don't be fooled if she has a nice or personable one charm you. If you go on a visit, just go with your gut. She is not a caring or respectful person so if that is what you need in a coach, her program is probably not the one for you.
"
"Not sure why the AD continues to roll her out there as head coach. Tammy Lohmann is horrific and her win % tells the story. opened up with some cupcakes this weekend only to go 0-5. This isn't oklahoma! it's frickn' Utah Valley and Idaho St.!! The alumni aren't happy with the direction of the program."
"Coach Letty is one of the best coaches that I have had, she is very understanding of any situation that you are going through. She will always be honest about softball, academics, personal life, or anything else you come to her with. I believe that she prides herself on being the type of coach that every player needs. She will be hard on you when you need it while also being the shoulder to lean on when that time comes. She is not afraid to speak her mind and let you know what is happening. She is very organized, respectful, and true to herself and her players. "
"Coach Letty is one of the most knowledgeable pitching coaches I’ve met. She is dedicated to her players and is always honest no matter what. She leads with confidence and is always ready no matter what is thrown at her."
"Coach Letty will always have your back and will always Coach you up. She will be direct and tell you what you need to improve on and will bust her butt to help you do so. Playing for her is an absolute blessings. Her knowledge and experience of playing softball at the highest level makes her an awesome coach to play for. "
"She is amazing on and off the field. Has helped me on and off the field, very reliable, and not only is she someone who cares about her athletes off the field but genuinely cares for them as an athlete. expects you to achieve and try your hardest every time no matter what dilemmas and will keep you accountable ."
"True players coach, and a great leader, turns nothing in to something every single season, short story 3 seasons as a pitching coach lost all her pitchers do to injuries and turned a position player into a pitcher that has never thrown and still went to regionals 2 out of 3 times. Now that’s a coach "
"awful tenure and win % thus far. terrible start to 2023, getting outscored 56-2 through 5 games, and run-ruled in each is an embarrassment. something needs to change. As an alumni i'm disgusted. coach TL lacks passion and confidence, change is in order."
"Coach is honest and direct. I had a great experience under her. Wish I had more time with her before she left to go to Sam Houston. Great coach and female role model."
"If I could give 0 stars I would. She is disrespectful towards players. She doesn’t care about their education. She is clearly bipolar. She will say you are the best one minute and tell you how terrible you are the next minute. She is very toxic and could care less about the players’ mental health. She will never have a winning season at SHSU because she doesn’t know what it takes to win. She doesn’t put her best 11 on the field. Her playing style is worse than high school. Absolute embarrassment to Sam Houston. Her minions…aka coaches…are just as bad as she is. Please don’t let your daughter play for her. This woman is very detrimental to athletes. "
"Do not play for this coach who is currently at Sam Houston State University. Do you let your daughter play for this coach if you care about their mental health. She is mentally abusive. She plays mind games. She will trick you into thinking she cares. She will flip on you without explanation. Very toxic."
"Would not want to play for this coach again. Spartan nation requires a true leader. Some coaches are meant to be lifetime assistants. No loyalty or honesty. Bad culture."
"My overall experience under Coach Curvelo was excellent. I developed into a better player and person under her leadership. She believed in the team and me. I won 4 Championships under her and the culture of the program is very welcoming and supportive and everyone is accountable and understands their role. Players can be themselves and she fosters a positive environment for all players. It’s an inclusive program that I am proud to be part of. "
"Incapable of caring, motivating, and understanding her own players or doing anything that doesn’t concern her own success and recognition. Only values favoritism and is not direct when asked for advice unless she’s publicly embarrassing you. Driven out by her old team at Cleveland State and incapable of beating a D1 team outside of The SWAC."
"Great coach, first impressions for him will stick forever. Knows who is the best and makes it known. Dislikes hard conversations such as letting a player know that they will not be getting playing time. Extremely knowledgeable about the sport and knows what it takes to be the best."
"She is one of the least intelligent people I have ever dealt with. She has trouble comprehending problems when you bring them to her attention and she is incapable of effectively adapting to problems. Her fixation on winning a championship keeps her from winning games, and her disconnect from the team is clear in the way they interact with her."
