"His lack of care in players caused me to sustain a career ending injury. His dismissive attitude toward the situation killed my spirits and the love for the game. Running players into the ground and just extreme disregard caused many players to push through serious injuries and wound up getting hurt even more."
"Overall, not a good experience with this coach. Far more negatives than positives. This coach makes players lose confidence in themselves. Unfair. Doesn’t believe in all of his players. Tells players they can quit if they’re unhappy, but doesn’t take action to ensure they’re happy."
"Coach Mac struggles with roster control, bringing on up to 16 freshman at a time while simultaneously struggling with retention rate. His training schedule is fairly inconsistent, and he oftentimes chooses poor times to lift (such as in the early morning before a difficult workout). The team is not competitive for a D1 program, which is evident by its lack of training facilites and knowledgeable coaching staff. In addition, many athletes struggle with overuse injuries. When dealing with injuries, Mac takes an “all or nothing” approach, which can be difficult when trying to recover from injury or illness. Many athletes become injured and be questioned about their honest regarding their health status. Finally, Coach Macfarlane’s personality and temperament will shift between extremes throughout the course of a week, days, or even hours. His favoritism towards athletes who preform well and are not injured is extremely evident, and creates a large amount of tension among teammates. While I believe that he truly cares about his athletes, he oftentimes promotes toxic behaviors and fosters an unwelcoming and unsportsmanlike environment. When visiting I would make sure to talk to several of the athletes and ask questions about his coaching style to ensure that you are compatible. "
"Love him as a person, not as a coach. This game is constantly changing and getting faster, Mike is stuck in the past and unwilling to change. The team needs a positive leader that shows confidence in their abilities and works to make them better."
"Uses intimidation and fear to control his swimmers. Talks about other swimmers to other swimmers. Not very knowledgeable about technique. Will not adapt to new training. Highly unprofessional."
"He is not open to hearing other opinions and can focus more on the relationships on the team than the actual swimming aspect. He would rather lose swimmers than adapt any new training styles. "
