"Not sure why the AD continues to roll her out there as head coach. Tammy Lohmann is horrific and her win % tells the story. opened up with some cupcakes this weekend only to go 0-5. This isn't oklahoma! it's frickn' Utah Valley and Idaho St.!! The alumni aren't happy with the direction of the program."
"Misogynist and an overall horrible human being. Do not play for this man unless you want him to absolutely ruin your self confidence and make you feel worthless on and off the court. Could care any less about his players and goes out of his way to create conflict. We had 3 hour long meetings at least once a month that cut into practice times and were 100% counterproductive. 0/10 "
"Mike creates a toxic team culture that is heavily ego driven. He has failed to adapt to evolving approaches towards the sport, to make up the difference his conclusion is that the athletes just aren’t driven enough (He loves to talk about his bronze medal) making him a dinosaur. I know multiple highly regarded rowers who said he made them full out love with the sport. With all this being said he does hold value to fairness and seat racing meaning although he has toxic values he doesn’t have favorites yet, if you are fast, you can get away with murder."
"awful tenure and win % thus far. terrible start to 2023, getting outscored 56-2 through 5 games, and run-ruled in each is an embarrassment. something needs to change. As an alumni i'm disgusted. coach TL lacks passion and confidence, change is in order."
"Jack Clark breeds a culture of success, whether that be in academics, athletics or the professional field, but that doesn’t come without being pushed. He isn’t the most loving or emotional coach, but if you have the mentality to get better no matter the cost he will get every ounce of potential out of you. I would rather have no other man guiding me through collegiate athletics. "
"I like Jesse so much! He has so much energy and very motivational. He would jump and dance on the pool deck and he always makes me smile. I have no lack of motivation or energy around him. He pushes me to become my best self and sometimes he has more faith in me than I have in myself. He is very elevating and if I ask for a change in practice, he happily makes some modifications to meet my “demands”. "
"I very much enjoy having Dave as a coach. He is a very good coach: attentive, caring, extremely motivational, but also understanding. He strives to achieve success and is not afraid to challenge us. He always has positive things to say and even though the huge change with the men’s and women’s team, he seems to have it together. "
"Would not want to play for this coach again. Spartan nation requires a true leader. Some coaches are meant to be lifetime assistants. No loyalty or honesty. Bad culture."
"Was very passionate about coaching. Always listened and was very helpful in making us succeed. Made us feel like family on the team and we had great team dynamic."
"Bobby Lockhart is the worst coach I have ever had. Does not effectively communicate and becomes defensive when questioned in any way. Seems to enjoy coaching men over women. Did not reach out to athletes during covid, repeatedly saying that he didn’t want to be “overbearing” when overbearing is the last thing Bobby could ever be. In my person interactions I have had with Bobby, I feel that he does not believe in me as an athlete and has trouble remembering our conversations and details about my training. He often seems emotionally detached and ignores female athletes on race day, preferring to take a hands off approach to race day advice. Tells funny stories about his cats, though. Friendly guy, terrible coach. "
"Bobby Lockhart does not know how to coach women. He views women as smaller men and gives his female athletes paired down men’s workouts. He doesn’t see athletes he only sees times. He is extremely defensive and does not take criticism well. He is the worst coach I have ever had. Over half the women’s team has quit during his time at CAL. "
"I can't recommend Cal Water polo because of the coaching staff. regardless of how much effort you put in and talent you have, she picks favorites. She will never be honest with you and will continue to lead you on to believe you are going to play. If she thinks you aren't talented, she will completely disregard you in practices."
"I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for Sam’s amazing ability to communicate his knowledge of the game with me and have a conversation everyday about getting better"
"Al is an amazing coach. He is very approachable and honest, but you must take the initiative to reach out to him for feedback. He makes good jokes, keeps training fun and interesting, and is extremely knowledgeable about the sport of rowing. "
"Coach Frandsen, despite being new to the job as head coach, did an outstanding job in the season of 2019. While still struggling to reach the whole bandwidth of the team motivationally, he will always support a hard worker no matter what level they come in at. Be determined, honest, and trust his season-orientated process for best results. "
"He will work you very hard but he knows what he's doing and is a solid technical coach; only improving year on year. He's absolutely passionate about winning and will do everything he can to make sure the team has the best shot possible. Tough coach but will push you to be the best version of yourself you can be."
"As the years progressed, her expertise in the sport failed to increase as well. Solely rating her coaching, she showed favoritism and did not display the qualities of a developing and contending coach in the Pac-12 conference. However, she was cool off the field, cared for her athletes’ academic well-being, and accomplished a lot managerially."
"Plays HARD into favorites and only utilizes those key players. Does not develop players to their full potential. Cares more about the future of field hockey than helping to the skills or motivation needed to win"
"Neil cares a lot about his athletes, especially in their academic and extracurriculars. He is willing to get you connected with people in your ideal professional industry if he has the resources. As a coach, he can be very emotional if players aren't performing at at times berate them, wavering their confidence and trust. "
"Is beginning to make changes to head in the right direction. Believes strongly in fitness and overworks the team to the point of large numbers of rowers out due to injury and sickness. Does not take advice or comments from the team members."
"Works you to the ground. Getting better from what I've heard. Doesn't listen to the athletes, knows only one speed and it's called insanity. Great rower in his time, but tough tough coach."
"Tries his best to put players in the best position to succeed. Sometimes overuses certain guy imo. Sometimes doesn't pull starting pitchers early enough when they get tired. Values data and technology. Has players write specific goals/ plans which allowed me to improve before I got hurt and was unable go play the end of te season. "
"I had an incredible collegiate experience having Brooke as my head coach. As me and my teammates grew during our years at Cal, we all witnessed Brooke growing too. Each year she improves, bringing something new and exciting to the table. I think the program has a bright future ahead with her as head coach. "
"Coralie is a great coach. She is very knowledgable and experienced in the sport of water polo. Her practices are tough, but fun too. She respects athletes who are though and work hard everyday!"
"If you are the best player on the team, she cares about you. If you aren't the best player, she will make you feel nonexistent. Doesn't care about her players, isn't organized, and terrible at communication. Not direct, blunt, or honest. "
"Awesome to work with and always available to chat to. He gave a good insight into rowing and no rowing related matters. Al is easy going and easy to get along with, which makes him easy to talk to."
"Extremely outdated coaching style. Makes her players figure everything out for themselves. Often makes her assistants do her dirty work so she doesn't look like the bad guy. "
"Don't think I've ever had a worse coach. She's brutally honest, definitely to a fault, she is disrespectful, and honestly doesn't have that much knowledge about the game-- in general but at this point she is too far behind in her pedagogy to ever win anything substantial again. "
"Although I did not connect with Shayla on a deeper level like some of the other athletes, she really did help bring out the best in me and has made my athletic college experience very fulfilling"
"Shellie is a great coach who truly cares about her players. She has always pushed me to be the best player/person on and off the field. She has build an incredible program at Cal that is build on trust and integrity, which is exactly what she expects from players."
"Shayla creates a personal relationship with you. She is understanding and knows that academics come before athletics. She is very flexible with injuries and always supports you no matter what. If you are recruited by her, she has faith in you."
"If you are not a middle distance runner, you really don't have much contact with Sandavol other than team meetings. The individual coaches are all very competent and are responsible for the bulk of work when it comes to running the team. His motivational speeches are fairly good, but he frequently has MASSIVE foot-in-mouth moments. "
"Coach Wilcox, in his time as my head coach has changed the way I view football and also life. He has years of knowledge and success from his previous coaching jobs paired with an intense will to win and dominate. But he is also personable and knows how to separate his on the field persona with how he interacts with players of the field."
"Al was a very hands off coach and not a great confidant. I found working with him to be extremely difficult. He seems to be going through the motions of what he knows to be successful for most athletes without considering that there and many different approaches that should be taken on such a large team. "
"Shayla's admitted that she greatly fears speaking in front of large groups, and it shows in front of our team. In my years at Cal, however, she has made steps to get past her fear by volunteering to speak at athletics department events and her composure in front of the team has improved as a result "

"Pushes the team to be their best and can be goofy at the appropriate times. Looking to build up a strong program. Stresses the importance of family. "
"I had a terrible experience at UC Berkeley. When you are a star athlete, you get treated like a work horse. All they care about is winning, not the well being of the athlete. If you're performing well you get special treatment and if you don't perform you get kicked to the curb. Meritocracy at its best."
"Oh Al, I hope you find this someday and laugh. I don't know if you were popular in high school. I get the feeling you were a little strange. I want you to know today, you win every popularity contest in my book. To girls looking to row at Cal, it will be the best decision you ever make."
"Mike Teti is a pleasure to row for. Unquestionably the best rowing coach that I have had. Over the past two years directly rowing under him I have improved immeasurably, and have been held accountable to improve as a person as well. I can not recommend rowing for Mike highly enough. If you have the erg times to get into Cal you will not regret your time at Berkeley."
"Shellie is a very passionate coach; however her theories and knowledge of the game are outdated. Strong players hockey skills become stagnant instead of improved, while players recruited to be "developed" are essentially "practice" players and not a large focus. Her focus is on the bigger picture instead of in the moment, and she very much so plays favorites and focuses strategies around those players. She is harsh, but only because she cares. Her criticism is also not very constructive."
"Coach Sandoval is a great coach, knowing how to operate a track and field team effectively and fluidly. His position seems more of a figurehead position than that of an actual coach, as his assistants do most of the work in both practice and meets. He is closer with some groups on the track team than others, which leads to lopsided communication. Nevertheless, he gets the job done."
"Playing for Neil McGuire turned out to be a very tough four years. He, and the program, was not at all what I had anticipated or expected after taking my official visit. The he mind games and favoritism he displayed are not suitable for coaching, and certainly not adult woman."
"Passionate about what he is doing and at the same time caring about his athletes. He always wants the best for you and the team and is there when you need him."
"Big team first type of guy, will go to any lengths to get the best out of his players, whether it’s long nights, early mornings, or just being there for you in times of need. "
