"I was fortunate enough to play under Coach Yates during my time at the University of Mary Washington. The program is lucky to have a leader and coach like him. He has high standards and will push players to their limit on the field because he wants the best out of them. Coming from playing at a high level, he knows what the UMW team is capable of and demands excellence day in and day out. Off the field, he is caring, charismatic, and easy to get along with. He is always available and willing to provide assistance wherever it is needed whether that be in the classroom, on the field, or in life. His vast knowledge for the game comes from years of experience as a player and coach at many different schools and divisions. He has been very innovative for the UMW program, bringing new ideas and drills to the table. Although some reviews may critique his style of coaching, the reality is that college soccer needs more coaches like Coach Yates. As a young college soccer player frustrated with playing time, it is easy to write a negative review about your coaching staff. The negative reviews about Coach Yates don't tell the whole story of who he is. He is dedicated, passionate, and does everything he does because he loves his players. Whether Coach Yates stays at UMW or takes on a new experience in college soccer, I would definitely play for him again."
"Playing for Coach Kilby at the University of Mary Washington changed my life for the better. Coach Kilby was by no means a perfect soccer coach; however, no coach is perfect. Coach Kilby was honest, fair, and direct with his decisions about players. More importantly, he truly does care about the well-being of his boys.
College soccer is not for the faint of heart. It truly is a 4-year process of ups and downs. There will be injuries, troubles with school, problems with social life, frustration with a lack of playing time, etc. and as a 18-22 year old, it is easy to pass the blame when things aren't going your way. The players I saw who completed 4 full years and graduated from the UMW Soccer Program were hardworking, resilient, humble, and never passed the blame (often times when it wasn't even their blame to take). If Coach Kilby benched them, they accepted it, embraced their new role, and elevated the team elsewhere because they knew there was a purpose behind his decision.
On every team, people need to add value somehow. The best, and most enjoyable, way to do that is to be the 'Star Player', scoring all the goals and winning all the personal accolades. But, if that's not you, then you may be a reserve player or injured player and need to add value some other way. Is it fun being the one filling up water bottles? No. But that doesn't mean it's not important.
At the end of the day, it's Division 3 soccer. Nobody is going to make a living playing professionally after their college career. The experience is 'soccer' yes, but what Coach Kilby ultimately gave me was an opportunity to grow into a man. If you are a high level club player and want to have a "fun" college experience while also simply playing soccer, I would recommend attending a larger school where you can do that more leisurely (club team) along with having the traditional college experience (Fraternities, College Football, Big parties, etc.). But, if you are a high level club player who is looking for the most rewarding experience of your life, wants to develop enduring relationships, and is willing to challenge yourself regardless of how many minutes you play on the pitch, go play for Coach Kilby. I'd do it all over again. "
"The training staff at UMW is below par. After coming down with a serious knee injury in a game I was told that it is not as bad as first thought. After needing to move home for surgery and MRIs it was clear the training staff had no idea the extent of my injury. I was even told to get up and try to walk when I was in no state to walk. "
"UMW has multiple turfed fields for lacrosse. The turf stadium is high quality but lacks lights which doesn't allow as many fans to come out for games because they must be played during classes."
"The University Tennis Center is incredible. Fairly newly renovated but is definitely the best athletic building on campus. For tennis players looking to go to UMW would definitely go give it a look."
"The University of Mary Washington has a specified grass rugby field and it is quite nice. The athletic weight room gets the job done too quite nice but is shared with all sports."
"During the offseason for soccer it's nearly impossible to have access to a field on campus. Many training sessions had to take place off campus at local complexes in Fredericksburg. The school doesn't help the team improve in the offseason and never grants access to the campus rec field. "
"The men's soccer locker room is disgraceful. The team uses a bathroom in the University Tennis Center and you aren't allowed to store things in the lockers because it's not even yours. The coach has said they will be getting new locker rooms every year but they jut don't seem to get put in. Also having no lights on the fields makes it difficult to get people out to games leaving many of them empty with just parents in the stands."
"Coach Yates is a good coach but gets overshadowed by the head coach and other assistant. He is almost always available to help you on or off the field. Can lose his cool sometimes and have a temper. Overall, understands where you come from in certain situations "
"He knows what you want to hear to keep you on the team. His sessions are rarely ran by himself and the sessions that he does take a big part in aren’t the best quality. He is a brilliant salesman, but without the amazing captains this team has had there would be no leaders. "
"No lights in the stadium making it hard to generate school spirit and attendance. Grass field is nice but speaker system and filming could be better. "
"Jason Kilby is a good recruiting coach and his skills end there. Beware. He will recruit you knowing he doesn't think you can ever make the first team and use you as a practice player to make his top 18 better. His asst coaches often lead games and practices. He runs the same tired set pieces that don't work. Most important, you will not improve by playing under Kilby. If you played for a premier travel club with a knowledgeable coach, you will be very disappointed."
"COViD was a challenging time for athletes and the coach missed an opportunity to support them. There was no effort to keep them engaged, motivated and positive. Not sure the coach has the knowledge we expected. Ran multiple plays that didn’t work, EVER (corner kick play) and didn’t ask leaders of the team to problem solve. The assistant coaches were miserable and confirmed an utter demotivating environment. No explanation or communication on why kids don’t play or are taken out of lineup. This wasn’t the experience my son signed up for. Told us a much different story when recruited."
"Coach Kilby is a great recruiter. He will tell you anything to get you to join the team. However once you get to the team, the dynamic quickly changes. If you don’t make an impact freshmen year or if he doesn’t like you, your chances of playing are near impossible. You’re travel team soccer style is no more. Without good leaders, the team can crumble under his method of coaching. Lacks player management and communication - unless he likes you. "
"Outdated coach, treats you like you’re beneath him, can’t get player’s names right, high school tactics. Head coach takes tactics from him, let’s him do all of the coaching in practice. "
"Coach Kilby is a great recruiter. He puts out all the stops and tells you what you want to hear when it comes to recruiting. He relies on the players to build the foundation of the team so if there aren't good leaders then the culture won't remain at a high standard. He has been successful due to his ability to recruit to his school. Think about the importance of playing your freshman year because it will be hard to break into the team."
"I went on a campus visit in 2019 and enjoyed my time. The hosts were really cool and I was knew one guy already going in so I was pretty comfortable. The older guys were great as well and were accessible for any questions or concern about the program. "
"Coach Webb has been at UMW longer than the students have been alive. He doesn't care to remember your name so you have to make an impression otherwise you're forgotten about. He consistently called me by the wrong name even heading into my junior year. He implements his style of play so if you don't fit good luck making the starting 11. Old school mentality but also doesn't connect with the kids just there as a volunteer to try and help the team win games."
"I think Coach Yates is a good assistant. He can sometimes be two-faced with his players and head coach but overall looks out for the players. He can be known to fly off the handle in training as well. Yates is accessible and will help you in any way outside of the classroom if you reach out to him."
"I believe the weight room and soccer fields are nice. The fields start off well and have a first good few games on it. But half way through the season the fields become raggedy and overused. The upkeep should be better due to having a grass game field and practice field. The practice field becomes almost unusable by the end of the season due to divots and dried out grass. The weight room is nice, a little small but is in pretty good shape for a DIII weight room. Plenty of benches and squats racks a little turf space to use. "
"Scott was new when I was a freshman. He didn’t recruit me. He always believed in me and molded me to the player I am. He helped me remember why I love to play soccer. He is incredibly passionate and is very soccer intelligent. I will say however, you will know who his favorite players are on and off the field. "
