"Coach is very cool and fun with everyone during practice. He is dishonest and doesn’t keep separation between coaches and players. He and his whole staff is young and try to “fit in”rather than delineate between players and coaches - no authority. Also does not develop. Utilizes portal to cherry pick older players rather than develop. There is NO development in his program unless it’s on pitching side by Coach Jackson who is excellent. "
"The best college lacrosse coach in country. His knowledge of the game is unmatched. He develops quality individuals both on and off the field. 2024 was perhaps his best coaching since he's been at Maryland."
"I think he’s the best in the world at his job on the field; off the field could be considered one of the worst. Poor motivator, leader; relies heavily on the culture created in the locker room by players to drive success. Has little respect outside of lacrosse knowledge within his own locker room. "
"The xfinity center is one of the coolest basketball arenas I have been to. It is also home to volleyball and wrestling. It’s located right next to the softball & lacrosse facilities which is super convenient. Easy to navigate inside as well "
"Not made to be a coach. Made inappropriate comments to players, never changed coaching styles and is very stubborn. Also majority of the team was always INJURED"
"Ray will always have your back and help you achieve whatever goal it is you have in mind. He sees so much potential in all his players and try’s his best to get it out of them. "
"Coach Valmon was an incredible athlete. Personally, I do not believe that a great athlete always makes a great coach. In my opinion, V was inaccessible at times and a poor communicator. The favorites game was definitely played and it showed. You were valued on your highs but on your lows, you barely existed. I wish this box was longer to say more. "
"He is undoubtedly one of the greatest coaches in collegiate athletics. If it were possible to go back to college and train under him, I would do it 100 times over. His hard work and dedication allowed for tremendous growth in both my athletic and academic endeavors. He is the definition of a coach that wants you to succeed on and off the track. "
"Coach Valmon is one of the hardest working coaches I have ever met. He works around the clock to ensure the success of his athletes and takes a personal interest in their growth and development. I achieved personal records as a direct result of his coaching and motivation. Proud Terp! "
"Coach Andrew Valmon is the greatest coach in the game. He has the professional experience, so he knows how to be professional and what to prioritize in his training. If I should describe him with three words it would be: passionate, professional, hilarious "
"I have ran for him for 2 years now and he is an amazing coach. He's very passionate about what he does and has taught me so much to become an all around better athlete. "
"He always encourages his athletes to give their best in everything they do. If he comes off tough, it's because he cares. He wants the best for his athletes and isn't going to take anything less. He's honorable, admirable, and a pleasure to play for. I am proud to be his athlete."
"He is out of touch with his athletes and plays favorites. If you are not a favorite he does not care about you. If you are hurt he does not care about you. You CANNOT get a hold of him. He never replies. If you are not his event group, he does not ask you about your training or how you performed. He does not motivate or engage you. "
"Coach Valmon means well but at times his focus on putting certain athletes in the best position to do well hinders the team on a much higher magnitude than I think he notices. He can be a bit intimidating to approach after hearing what he has done to others. Overall, to me he is a nice person to me. "
"Coach Valmon is a knowledgeable and motivating coach. If he sees you putting in the effort and busting your butt to achieve your goals he will do everything possible to make sure that you have the tools to reach those goals. "
"Spends little time developing athletes that don't come in already at the top of their event. As such, he plays the recruiting game pretty hard which limits his already inaccessible schedule. I can't say much about his coaching style as I wasn't in his event group, but you only need to see the past decade of lackluster results to shape an opinion."
"He is definitely a very motivational person, and makes me want to work harder. I don't mind him being hands-off at times, because that's what our event coaches are there for. I talk to my event coach almost everyday, but Coach V always talks to me before meets to make sure I'm set, and I think that at the end of the day, he keeps tabs on everyone"
"Missy has a gift when it comes to coaching field hockey, but also being an incredible female leader and mentor. Playing for her at UMD was a privilege, since I not only grew my game but was allowed to become the woman I am today! I owe so much to Missy and am so so thankful to know to this day that she always has her past & present players backs! "
"Coach V can be a very encouraging. I do agree that it is sometimes hard to reach or get definite responses or tailored workouts/help for your event area. I did appreciate that he came to cross country practices often even after the sprinters started their fall training. Overall nice guy but can be a little out of touch with certain athletes"
"I love Coach V; though I did not have the best relationship with him while being his athlete, I know that he will always have my back. If I ever reach out to him, I have no doubt he would connect with me if I needed him. I wish he would connect better with his athletes at the time of their tenure, whether they jump, throw, or run."
"I've never had a problem with him as my coach, I love his training and the way he treats me not just as an athlete but as a person. Is always there to talk if I need to, which is awesome considering he has 60+ people on the teams he coaches."
"He is a nice individual, but can improve on being a better coach. He can be more straightforward with all of the athletes as well as train each athlete based on their individual strengths and weaknesses instead of lumping together athletes in a single event group. Additionally, it would help the athletes more if he was better with communication."
"If it wasn't for him being a world champion runner, he would not have a job. 0 success in 15+ years. The stats that prove him to be a good coach are nonexistent. Saying he's a good coach is an opinion, but the facts and statistics speak for themselves, Valmon is absolutely terrible. Comical look for the program that he still is the HC."
"Great coach with impeccable field hockey/life knowledge and background. Helps you become the best version of yourself. Make the most of your time on and off the field, no matter what your role may be, in order to get the best possible all-around experience!"
"Valmon is a great motivational speaker but when it comes to training athletes it's subpar. For sprinters to succeed under his program you have to come in super talented. He plays favorite and forgets about others needs. Most of MD's success come from the Field Coaches. This past year, only field event athletes made it to NCAA. Says enough."
"Coach V will always make time before and after races or workouts to talk with you. He is an expectional motivator and knows how to communicate with his athletes. He helps you believe in yourself and gain confidence to accomplish your goals. "
"Coach Valmon is a good coach on paper, but his actions do not always meet his promises. Often, he plays mind games with athletes and creates unnecessary ambiguity in communication. He has clear favorites, which creates division within the team. "
"He's real with you, doesn't sugarcoat anything. If you want to be great and are willing to do what's necessary he'll put you in a position to succeed."
"One of the best quarter milers there ever was and coaches with the knowledge of his successful experience. I've grown so much as an athlete thanks to his commitment to pushing my physical and mental limits in a constructive way. "
"Missy encourages, motivates, challenges and expects the best out of her players. She roots for them during their experience at UMD and afterwards. I couldn't be more proud for being involved with this program and history. She is a legend."
"Has a great understanding of lacrosse, but coaches as if we were in the NFL equivalent for lacrosse. Sometimes overwhelming. But gets results so it's great if that's what is important to you"
"I had an amazing time, although I didn't play as much as I would have liked. That is no reflection on coach, it's more advice to think about if playing time is important to you before committing to a college. Overall had a great experience"
"It's been a while since I played with Coach Frese, but she made my college basketball experience well worth it. I look back and wish I thanked her more for all she has done and continues to do for the program"
"Valmon is a great coach, he knows the sport inside and out. He works to create the best experiences for his student athletes both during and after college. He's always understanding and easy to relate to, great collegiate coach!"
"Missy Meharg is a Hall of Fame, National Championship coach and former Olympian. I chose to go to the University of Maryland to play field hockey because she treats the team like family. There was no hierarchy and I still keep in good touch with her. I was lucky to be a part of the team and be coached by her."
"Coach Reese is an outstanding coach who genuinely cares about her players. She has a deep understanding of the game and fosters a love for lacrosse in her athletes. If your daughter has the opportunity to play for Coach Reese, you will be more than satisfied."
