"Think twice if you consider picking brooks and his staff. Brooks will make it clear from the start that he will put the starting 11 above the rest of the team and he will rarely be subbing. First impressions during scrimmages seemed to dictate whether you’d see the field again, with little focus on player development.
The coaching staff created an emotionally draining environment. Individual meetings often felt personal and left players in tears. On bad days, their frustrations turned into harsh, unprofessional criticisms and would be personal not just about soccer. If you chose to transfer, he would go out of his way to damage your reputation, speaking negatively about the you to other coaches and attempting to block opportunities elsewhere. Also there is at least 6-7 players transferring each semester. You will regret it if you go. Also the 3 fitness test you will have to do is on another level but for them it’s just the “standard” and they will not acknowledge the hard work you are putting into passing them. "
"It’s shocking this coaching staff is still at this school. Compliance had meetings with entire team and to my knowledge, almost if not all, discussed how much they did not enjoy their experience with this staff. Including myself. Did not feel valued at all. The definition of a gas-lighter. I spread the word to my area/club to never send another athlete there without thorough research. Could have gotten better now, but from my experience, I absolutely hated the sport when I was done. "
"Isn’t honest until he needs to be honest. He make his decision on whether you will play or not in the first week. Cares about his reputation more than anything else, and will do anything to upkeep it. Really only cares about you to the extent that you will help him win. What he says and his actions rarely line up, he will say anything to get what he wants. High amount of transfers every year, don’t expect the team to ever look similar year to year. Doesn’t listen and really hard to talk to. He makes everything about himself and according to him you will never be working hard enough."
"He is a good person with good intentions. The whole coaching staff at Nebraska has been there for a long time in which the modern game of soccer is not how it had used to be. These coaches know a lot about the game of soccer itself. They don't know how to coach a group of 18-23-year-old girls as the game has evolved. There is a lot to a D1 college soccer program that includes relationship building, leadership from the coaching staff, recruiting, and many more. A women's college program needs more than just people that know the game of soccer. For him, it is strictly soccer and it hurts the program. "
"Being an extremely organized individual, John breaks down each aspect of the game and encourages his players to be "students of the game". I have learned more about the game of soccer in my 3 years working with John than I have in the 17 years previous. His main focus is developing an individual to reach their full potential, or "max out" as we like to call it. I feel challenged and valued each day, and am very grateful for the opportunity to work with John."
"He's a great coach that genuinely cares about his athletes, he treats us just like we were his own kids. He wants us to reach our full potential and pushes us with positive reinforcement to do so."
