"The most knowledgable coach I've had the privilege of learning from in my 10 years of rowing. He knows the sport very well--everything from current events in the rowing community to detailed biomechanics and the use of technology. He is clearly communicates what he wants to see and how he wants you to achieve it. Definitely a "say it like it is" type of guy so if you're easily offended, well...don't be. "
"I can agree that Coach Dan is very passionate about the sport of rowing, but he isn’t respectful to the majority of athletes on his team. I have personally been told to “shut the hell up”, and have heard other girls experiences with him over things I don’t agree that a coach should discuss because it crosses a boundary (weight comments to rowers and coxs, calling them names, and more). He was very nice when he first came to Kansas, but something changed very recently and I’ve never had a coach be so disrespectful to athletes both to their face and behind their back."
"Dan was an amazing addition to the coaching staff, he added a calm and collected perspective to the team. He always advocates for what is going right, not just the constructive criticism for what is going wrong. I appreciate what he has added to our program and I really enjoy his coaching style."
"Very knowledgeable about rowing but doesn’t seem to care about the personal lives of his towers and never asks how things are doing. Also says that it’s not his job to motivate us and puts a lot of blame onto his towers when things don’t go well"
"I love coach Dan so much. I’ve been in this sport for 7 years and he is genuinely the best coach I’ve ever had and I’ve had many many coaches in my life in sports as well as in this sport. He is beyond knowledgeable in this sport and is always sharing the physics and mechanics behind everything that he does to make the boat itself better for us athletes. He is an amazing communicator and is able to adapt to a variety of communication that is needed on the team while still remaining honest and up front with us. He makes the sport fun and makes putting in the hard work, even on the rough days, fun and positive. He continues to stay logical with us and our abilities in our conference and over in D1 rowing. He loves to make practice fun by making jokes but also knows how to emphasize the importance of hard work and fully explaining how we can get to our goals for the season. He makes sure to listen to every athlete in his boats and their opinions regarding how practice went, how the boat chemistry is, and he is great at communicating with coxswains about practice, what he needs from us, how line ups feel, etc. He has a lot of trust in us and we have a lot of trust in him. He is always 100% there for us and always gives us the confidence boosts even if we don’t need it. He is always pushing us past our limits in the best way possible and is always making sure to recognize not only the things we need improve on but also recognizes our accomplishments too. I could go on about how great of a coach he is all day but he’s just amazing and has moved this program up so much already in the few months he’s been at KU. "
