"My scholar-athlete experience was severely limited by Coach Young. Davidson itself is a great school, and the facilities, medical staff, and resources are generally appropriate…despite the athletic department having only one mental health counselor for all 500 student-athletes…a HUGE issue at Davidson. Favoritism is very apparent within the coaching staff, Coach Young’s practices are unproductive, and communication is extremely poor. Don't expect a response for several days, if you receive one at all. In my experience, Coach Young often disregards medical opinions and questions your honesty if you truly need time to recover or take care of yourself. This creates the impression that you are not putting in as much time and effort as your teammates, even when dealing with legitimate health concerns. Coach Young and other members of the coaching staff demonstrated unprofessionalism through apparent favoritism, poor communication, and a lack of support for athletes’ recovery needs."
"Coach JY does a great job of striking a balance between belief in an athlete and pressure. Before coming to college, I felt that I was pressured to go a certain time and disappointing my coach if I did not achieve it. At Davidson, Coach JY focuses on encouragement while understanding that athletes are already so hard on themselves and often do best with positive rather than negative reinforcement. He prioritizes the athlete as a person and student first which shows in his encouragement of our pursuits outside of the pool. Lastly, he is always looking at the latest research on swimming performance and keeps up with results that can help with our technique and training."
"John is one of the most knowledgeable people I've met in the sport of swimming. He truly cares for each of his athletes and makes sure we receive the coaching necessary for us to exceed. He is very open to conversation about practice and competition methods and is very easy to talk to."
