"Horrible experience playing here at Elon even as a star player. How Hexter has kept his job as a male who cannot connect with his players is beyond me. He is not receptive to feedback and flies through assistant coaches, who are very forthcoming about his lack of support. This type of “leader” should be not allowed to coach women "
"Dave only coached to select players on the team. If you were not one of the few he favored, you became a scapegoat for all the mistakes of the team as a whole. Forget it if you couldn’t play the way he wanted you to. If you could not conform your playing style to his, you were not advancing off the practice squad. This was not to be confused with being unable to adjust to his floor coverage and positioning. This was if you were unable to change your technique. Regardless if you were a decent player, or if there was nothing wrong, if you could not adjust to how he specifically wanted your form, you were not playing. He was not motivational if you were struggling and his coaching technique/style was closer to yelling profanities than to anything instructional.
He was disrespectful to his players, and there were numerous instances of Dave being unprofessional and using disrespectful language directed at the team infront of recruits. He had discussions with players about changing their majors so they would have more time to focus on volleyball, and showed little to no support for the girls that did not want to sacrifice their future career for the sport.
He was emotionally insensitive to players on multiple occasions. He had shown little sympathy when there had been a hospitalization of a player’s family members mid season, and he took it out on her when it was affecting her performance on the court.
He would often “pout” on the bench, letting his assistant take over coaching. Dave would sit on the bench, arms folded, with an annoyed look on his face, only moving to throw his arms up in the air or act like he was going to break his clipboard. One instance in particular was so bad, the other team’s student section called him out on it mid game and made up a chant for him.

"Coach Tendler helped me develop my skills on the court and she cares about my performance in the class room as well in order to help me become and well rounded individual. "
"Through all my injuries, he never stopped believing in me and encouraging me to not give up on myself. While my time with Coach got cut short, the memory I will take with me is him approaching me the week things were getting canceled and him expressing how much he believed in me and that I was ready to accomplish my goals. "
"lack of motivational skills, poor leadership, tended to blame others for every problem, unethical at times, always lied about situations that would directly affect him, and an overall bad experience"
"Never played for a coach with worse soccer knowledge. Wants to coach 11 defending behind the ball, but he can’t even coach that right. Don’t even get me started with offensive tactics because the man has none, for 3 years guys have been asking and he doesn’t have one, he just believes in kicking the ball into the corner and running fast.Awful coach"
"Fitness over tactics. Defense first with direction to run at 100mph chaotically. Offense style of play is get the ball high and wide and run fast. If you are not big and fast it us not likely you will play. If you are big fast and run until your legs fall of you will not come off the field. "
"A coach who values fitness much more than technical ability. Can always be reached by his players, but lacks ability to relate to players and motivate them to want to play for him. "
"I had Coach Kevin my last two years at Elon University. He is GREAT! He is one of those people that makes you want to do better for yourself and your team because he really makes you try to realize your greatest potential. I PR'd in all of my events under his coaching. He's very honest, sensible, and understanding...all around great guy. "
"She's way too much into everyone's life. She gets good recruits, but then they come in and she can't do anything with the talent. Full of empty promises and doesn't know how to just be a coach. Unmotivational. Has no real knowledge of the game (she played basketball). She's cheap and that's why she's there."
"very great coach! I have learned so much about running and have learned to train so much smarter than I ever had. In my first year with Coach Kevin, I was able to PR in the 10k with his training. Be ready to work your butt off with this coach though. He is also into heavy lifting which is EXTREMELY helpful! "
"Enormous ego. One of the worst coaches I've ever had. Cares about wins and losses more than he cares about his players. Uses his staff like puppets, no assistant coach has any say whatsoever in game decisions. Plays favorites constantly. If you're not one of his favorites you're left behind. Do yourself a favor and refrain from committing to Elon. "
"I have a great relationship with Coach Neal. He has been a friend and mentor to me as a student athlete at Elon University. He is honest and motivational because he sees potential and wants every person to live up to it. He is cool and understanding, just wants honesty, effort, and investment from his players."
"He is good at manipulating you to go to the school but everything he says will not actually happen. If you want to get better as an athlete this is not the place to go. He is not approachable and will never listen to anything you say and does not care about the athletes whats so ever."
"I love my coach. I honestly do. She can be overbearing sometimes and sometimes in my business, but it's all out of love. She believes in me and my abilities and gives me multiple chances to succeed on the field. My only complaint is that our schedule is everywhere so can't Plan anything ahead of time, but overall, she's great."
"Coach Anderson is one of the most genuine and caring college coaches I have come across. She understands the time constraints of being a student-athlete and doesn't dismiss academics in favor of athletics."
"She was a great , energized coach. She would always find different ways of motivating the team like creating a rap song about being a championship team. She was a big advocate for if you work hard and show your worth then you will get playing time which was a big shift from the previous coach that was more about politics."
"Coach Smith is a well rounded person overall. She knows all of the in's and out's of the game of basketball because she has been there on many different levels. She comes to practice and games everyday with a positive mentality and a will to make us better basketball players and people in general. Honestly, there is really not anything bad I could say about Coach Smith because she understands what it takes to be successful and will push us to be successful. She's great!"
"Coach Tendler is a very knowledgable about the game of volleyball but despite all of that she cares a lot about her athletes not just as athletes but as people. She wants them to succeed not only on the court or the classroom but in life as well. She is very understanding that life goes on after we are done here at Elon and that our futures are important."
"Coach E has a a great personality and cares about us a lot. He's very understanding and easy to talk to. However him being the only coach for sprinters, jumps, /pole vault it's hard to get that one on one attention. He is often too busy trying to coach other girls and forgets about the rest. Coach just needs some help ans I think the team will be able to benefit more. He can also be very passive aggressive at times."
"Track and field for women has a tendency to be tough on the appearance of their athletes. This happened with this coach as well. This coach referred to athletes having "thick leg syndrome" & some athletes began to have negative body images of themselves. Which this resulted in obsessive weight loss and decrease in performance. Instead of checking in on athletes that this was noticeable with, he continued to push them. I believe more college coaches need to be aware of body image disorders."
"Things to note: He coaches all events, so sprints, jumps, hurdles, pole vault, and high jump. This can be frustrating because he can not allocate time to every athlete and he isn't open to having multiple coaches. He is very religious so there are times when his religious beliefs interfere with his comments, which can be offensive and hurtful. He has a good attitude about training and stays positive but I would say he is a little behind on the times in regards to running/sprint workouts."
"Coach E's best quality is knowing how to win a major meet. He knows how to put the right athletes in the right events and knows what they are capable of to produce winning results. However, because there is one coach and 20 plus girls to train who do several different events, it is hard to divide his time to work with you on learning technique and other specific skills related to your event."
"He's a great Coach, but I definitely think he needs some help as far as hiring other coaches. Sometimes I don't think he pays enough attention to certain groups and he just has a lot on his plate and if we had help from other coaches I think it will be very beneficial."
"Toxic environment and not understanding at all. Very bad choice of a college to play basketball yet. loved my school but hated playing basketball here"
"If you are a student who aspires to be a professional athlete, this coach is not for you. He coaches the entire track and field team by himself with one throwing coach. i have known of individuals who offer to volunteer their time to coach but he kindly declines. I was often left to coach myself on many occasions. He comes off very aggressive but overall, he is a nice christian man who cares about his athletes and wants them to succeed outside of track and field."
"My experience as a collegiate lacrosse player under Coach Hexter was not an enjoyable experience and I believe my teammates would agree. While I got a lot of playing time during my time there, Hexter was tough to approach, he lacked support for players that were not his "favorites" and could not handle constructive criticism from the team. While he seems fun-loving, his actions speak much louder than his words. He would be a much better coach if he listened to and respected his players."
"Coach Kennedy was fair, honest, and motivated to win. All things necessary to bring home a championship and instill a winning mentality and expectation within his program. Work hard, stay out of trouble, keep up your grades, and compete; he'll love you and give you every opportunity to succeed. As a former Elon student and player himself, he can sniff out the ones who are more interested in partying and will not be as willing to give second chances to those players. High standards coach"
