"Head line says it all.. if you’re looking to go to seton hall for swimming, don’t. If you see Derek’s number pop up on your phone it’s best not to answer. You could get so much more from another school.. the best part about the team is just that, the team. We really hold ourselves together but there is still so much divide and it’s easy to see. You have the swimmers who work hard and keep there heads down and eat s**t from him, and then have the ones who just complain to him until they get what they want, but then it just hurts the rest of the team… Training is mid at best. I have friends at other school who improved so much in one year and I barely improved my PRs from HS this season. Felt like I trained harder in HS than here… Training sessions are repetitive, felt like I’ve been doing the same practice over and over again a every week… The one thing I will say that’s positive about him is that he is accessible but seldom listens to what you have to say unless you complain over and over and over again. Then he just folds and is whiny about it to everyone behind your back.. He has a lot to learn to be a good HC.. Not sure how he’s made it this far."
"No softball IQ. Simply loses games with a talented team by horrible coaching. No organization. Does not value players as a human unless they perform well on field. "
"Derek is a good guy with a nice family who overall does care for his athletes. He is understanding about athlete's mental health, flexible when it comes to class schedules, and supportive of professional development. Many people on the team are active members of the campus community because unlike at many other places, Derek allows you to be a full-time athlete, student, and person.
With that being said, Derek is not a good coach and often a difficult person to work with. While I got along with Derek, I know others who continuously clashed with him. He is scattered in everything from the way he writes practices, to his inability to get an itinerary out on time, to his communication. He is not a detail-oriented coach, and once he identifies something wrong with your stroke, he repeats it for many years. He rarely comes up with an original idea for practice, and week after week, the team finds themselves doing the same things, on the same intervals, on the same day. Derek does not recruit intelligently, and the quality and number of recruits has decreased significantly since I joined in 2019. Recruiting is unbalanced, resulting in huge sprint and stroke groups (leading to frustratingly crowded practices) while IM and distance swimmers often have lanes completely to themselves. Worst of all, Derek treats full-time coaching like a part-time job. He struggles with childcare more than you can imagine. He routinely misses practices for personal issues, and has little to no availability during school hours. Swimmers are expected to work around their busy schedules to accommodate his limited availability- trying to schedule a meeting with him is impossible, and half the time he ends up cancelling it anyways.
It is too bad that Derek is the head coach of this team, because the school is a great place filled with great people and supportive teammates. Admin allows these issue to persist, in part because the team practices at times when no one else is in the rec (and thus issues are not recognized), but also because they just don't care. Swimming is clearly a low-revenue sport not worth their time or effort, no matter the show of support they put on. "
"I had a great 4 years in a swimming sense. I improved, had okay years, and had bad years. It is part of the sport. but I genuinely believe I could have done better with a different head coach. For example, I had made a mistake senior year. A mistake that could have been moved on from quickly if Derek had the mental and emotional capacity to forgive someone of their mistakes. Instead I was met with rudeness, death stares when I walked past derek (I had a friend notice and inform me). I would ask a simple question, and he would yell the response back to me. There is no room for learning from your mistakes, you must be perfect at all times. Along with this, the lack of transparency is worrying. Itineraries are sent a day or two before a travel trip, if you question what is being done it is usually met with "because I said so" or "Because this is the right way", and worst of all, if there are any swimmer suggestions, they are met as though it is an insult. In any sport, once an athlete cannot communicate openly with a coach, the relationship is pointless. Looking at the results also, it seems like administration does not care for this program. It is sad to see a coach destroying a program with an administration that doesn't care. He will try to clean up his act from not showing up this year, but will return to his normal immature behavior come the fall. He did not show up to practices this year due to child care responsibilities that should have been taken care of out of work. It is not clear how much administration knows about this. This is all before the lack of swim knowledge and recruiting he does, which can speak for itself when you look at results."
"I think it just goes to show that after this year at Big East Champs, it should be his last as HC. Consistent decline in points scored over the last 3-4 years. Not many individual or relay champions… Childish behavior and definite anger issues… leaves practices early or doesn’t show and tells us it’s an emergency with his kid. Idk what kind of upper management would allow a highly paid coach to just come and go as he pleases. The point of you being paid is to coach and impart knowledge, but tbh I don’t want his knowledge… Team holds themselves together. Good team culture despite."
"The coach has a good understanding of the sport, but he also seems to struggle with anger management issues. There are concerns about his attendance, as it's unclear how many days he's actually missing due to childcare responsibilities that should have been addressed outside of work hours. Only the people on deck really know when he isn't there, as I doubt higher-ups would know what happens on the pool deck since no athlete complains. As he is compensated by Seton Hall to fulfill his coaching duties, it would be beneficial if he could fully commit to his role or otherwise hand off the head coach position to the assistant. Team culture is good."
"Does not take responsibility for mistakes and acts like a child towards his swimmers. Very repetitive in practice sets. Does not encourage his swimmers and holds grudges against a select swimmers and picks them out repetitively to yell at them."
"Derek has been the head coach for a while, and it is clear he cannot handle the job. Derek consistantely treats his swimmers with disrespect and doesnt know how to properly output his emotions. He is extremely embarassing and immature when it comes to what makes him upset. He will blow up on the smallest thing and always hold a grudge. if you upset him, good luck getting him to like you ever again. He is an embarassing excuse of a coach."
"I change my answer. He is the worst coach. Treats his swimmer very poorly and doesn’t know how to control his emotions and ends up taking them out on his swimmers. I have had anxiety going to practice for the past month and will until I’m done swimming. Do not come here and definitely do not contact Derek to come to seton hall."
"angie was a great coach while i was being recruited. after that i thought about quitting. she ran us to the point of throwing up and passing out. she’s a menace to the softball community. She plays favorites. She talks about being a great team yet our team was extremely clicky, and even beyond that she saw the clicks and chose which one was her favorite."
"Derek has no idea what he’s doing. Says one thing, completely does another. Practices are all the same. Had a great first year with him as HC but every year after was stagnant or declining. Had to practice during open swim hours as I never got enough during normal practices. If I had to do 8x75s again I was going to scream. Gave only his best swimmers, or the ones that complained enough, whatever they wanted. The rest were alway left in limbo. His assistant coaches know more than he does, but kept them sidelined or “doing tasks” while he coached because he wanted the spotlight. He road off the previous HCs coat tails and has declined the program since. Shameful"
"Very old school mentality — pushed us through injury and illness to compete and commonly made comments regarding weight. Motivational in speaking and cared somewhat for the athlete"
"For a mid-major the facilities are great. I love how everything is all in one spot and easy to get to. The only downside is that only the front door to the building is unlocked which is frustrating when trying to get places quick on campus. There was flooding, and am unsure of the renovation. But compared to other mid-majors the facilities are great, has everything you need! "
"I personally loved Coach Smith. She truly cares about her players and their well being. My freshman year we would have weekly check ins to ensure you were adjusting well to college and handling everything well emotionally, mentally, and in the classroom. She did struggle to keep the team culture and team environment in good condition, but one on one if you build a relationship with her she will always have your back. A little goofy at times, and not the most organized but I liked her. "
"Carissa Leoni is amazing. She is tuned in for the athletes that she works with and is so extremely organized. Never misses a meeting, never cancels and always knows the right thing to say. She'll hound you if you get off track in class but it is all out of love and support and she'll celebrate you if you're doing great. I loved meeting with her I always left with a smile on my face. "
" Roberto is honestly one of the best in the business. He is always approachable, and always down to have a chat. When you come to him for advice or career support he is willing to go the extra mile for you. He has a great heart and it's hard not to feel good after you talk to him."
"Ang is a great weights coach. He is approachable and knowledgeable but you have to crack a shell to get to him. Doesn't know much about the sport that I did, but made an effort to understand it. Cool guy and sometimes let us pick what music we wanted in the weight room haha"
"Kaitlin Kelly was the AT for my team and I can't say enough good things about her. She is very knowledgeable on everything AT. Although she doesn't have a background in our sport, seemingly she tries hard to learn about it and our bodies. I felt like I could go to her for anything, even mental health advice. She's the real deal. "
"I loved coach moon, he is the definition of old school and his training style reflects both that, and his extensive track background. I personally enjoyed Moon as a coach, however I feel my performance in my sport MAY have been better under a different coaching style. Regardless, I was a cross country runner with no chance of actually going pro and I wouldn’t give up the SHU team, coach, and friends I made at Seton Hall for another minute off my 8k time because at the end of the day your experience and mental is way more important than your time"
"I believe that Coach Sapp has his flaws just like every other division 1 swim coach. Sure at times, he may not be a good communicator even though he stresses it. And sure he can have trouble from time to time accepting that he is in the wrong. But are there really coaches or people with 0 flaws? Derek's flaws are minuscule and if you take the easy effort to acclimate yourself to how he works, then you will succeed and enjoy your time at Seton Hall. Derek is an amazing coach who knows how to make swimmers better. His practices are hard and always gets the job done at the end of the year. He is insanely caring about your academic life and can sometimes seem like he is hounding you. But in reality, he just wants what's best for you as a swimmer and as a young adult. You must respect and trust a coach for them to respect and trust you. And if you can respect and trust Derek, then the same will be given to you. Derek is one of the most influential and important coaches I have had in my career. Overall, Derek is a very caring coach with every right intention for you as a swimmer and as a young adult. you don't win back 2 back big east titles by not knowing anything about swimming or not caring about your athletes. "
"Coach Derek is the most unknowledgeable and unprofessional coach I have ever had. Not only does he lack is social awareness, particularly in interactions with women, but also severely lacks compassion, empathy, and good communication skills. He is unable to separate his personal matters from the pool and often takes frustration or stress out on swimmers. He expects exemplary communication but seldom reciprocates. Outside of his attitude and personality, he is an incompetent coach who never gives helpful or constructive insight into swims. He is unwilling to listen to swimmers needs or suggestions. When issues are brought up, He takes criticism personally and becomes defensive and closes off. He pretends to care however actions do not show. The team is amazing although the culture is entirely created by the team."
"Understands that different athletes respond to different coaching methods and is willing to do his best to adapt to each persons needs in order to allow them the best possible opportunities. Very realistic and down to earth. "
"I went on a recruiting visit late in my senior year so it was only a day visit, come to find out, they only offered day visits for this specific team. I flew in the night before and stayed off campus in a hotel because the coach doesn't allow athletes to stay with the athletes in fear of partying, even though it was a Tuesday. The next day seemed rushed because my flight out was at 3 PM so I was really only there in the area for like 20 hours total. It seemed rushed and I only met like a 1/8 of the team and made my decision on the small information that I experienced. Overall would not recommend, the flight was paid for myself, which was nice though. "
"Seton Hall's facilities are pretty good for the size of the school and the overall funding. They're all in one building which is nice, and it helps for team cohesion but also meeting other athletes. The academic center for athletes is really nice and just big enough for a good amount of athletes to be in there and work on their stuff. The weight room is small but there isn't a football team so there isn't much need for a large weight room. A lot of the facilities are geared towards the successful basketball team but overall, things are aesthetically pleasing and I met a lot of really good friends in these facilities. "
"Andrew Leblanc is a good coach overall. He is an assistant to a coach that doesn't seem to let him do much on his own, but is a personable coach in the long run. He swam for Seton Hall, so he doesn't have much experience outside of the school but excels in training in IM and Distance. His sets make sense when he's the one that makes them and he listens to his athletes and responds, even if there are multiple sarcastic comments. "
"Derek Sapp comes off as an approachable coach during the recruiting process as a young head coach, but his age definitely shows in his ability to coach or lack thereof. He cares a lot about his swimmers, but sometimes seems to confuse his care for his swimmers, and his care to keep his job. He was the assistant coach for a few years before eventually being promoted to the head coach making him the youngest head coach for swimming and diving in the NCAA at the time. His practices are simple and swimmers that come from an intense swimming background in HS seldom get faster because there is no thought that go into the practices, nor is there room for them to ask for change, because trust he will not part his own ways because of his so called "philosophy." Seton Hall should stop with the inside hires and start fresh with something new because there aren't going to be any new Big East team titles any time soon. "
"Coach Churchill is new to Seton Hall this year, and was recently hired coming into my senior year. I honestly have too many great things to say about her. For starters, Coach Churchill is one of the coolest coaches I've had in all 17 years of my softball career. She's in-tune with teen/young adult culture and loves using social media as a positive platform to promote the team (she let's us take funny Tik Toks and run our Instagram account as well!). She's also very understanding when it comes to school work and other career affiliated things outside of softball. She prioritizes academics, career opportunities, and community service, and is genuinely such a great person to be around. I will say, she is intense and loves the game of softball like no other; but at the end of the day if I ever need someone to talk to, I know that I can go to her in confidentiality and she will talk to me as a human being, and completely puts softball to the side. I'm extremely blessed to have her as a coach, and she genuinely cares about the well-being of each and everyone one of my teammates, which is something really rare."
"Was told when the last coach left there was a large search for a new coach and of course they ended up hiring our assistant. Not a very talented communicator or motivator. Terribly hard to talk to about mental health. "
"Verbally abusive, very little knowledge of the game to be able to effectively coach. Body shamming and creates a vindictive cultural that pits players against each other"
"Derek is a very young head coach. He has some great experience in coaching stroke and sprint, and is working on his distance coaching abilities. He is one of the most caring coaches I have ever had and is trying to do the right thing even though sometimes it is hard to agree with his stance. He cares for the person not just the athlete. "
"Pretends the environment to be something that he did while it was of the efforts of the team.
Lacking the social and intellectual ability to realize how he effects many of us under him, which typically is very poor impact causing much stress, anxiety, confusion, misunderstanding, and blames on others since he has hold in his "position of power" "
"Is not very genuine or honest. Manipulates her players to benefit her self and glories the players on the team that bring down the team. These players bully and cause unnecessary drama on the team, preventing the team from being it's best."
"Best coach I have ever had. He gave me the opportunity to continue playing the game I love that no other school would give me. I've learn lessons from him that will use after college in the real world. "
"He lacks necessary knowledge for the overall sport making it incredibly frustrating to swim for him. I swam for him when he was the assistant and he was good when he was being told what to do. Now being head coach it is apparent that this job is too much for him."
"Derek is a new head coach. I swam for him when he was the assistant and then head coach.Derek cares about how swimmers preform but more importantly cares about their well being. As any first time head coach he has a lot to learn which comes with experiance. He is a strong sprint coach/his distance coaching has gotten better.Team atmosphere is great"
"He was hired because the SHU administration is more interested in finding coach's that they can push around. From my understanding he was a great assistant coach but undertook a head coaching job to early in his career. Nice man though."
"It's hard to tell if he's trying and falling short or he's being half-caring all the time. Honesty is often sugar-coated. Speeches given are repetitive. Does not take advice or critisism well."
"Great coach & great guy!! He has Olympic experience, and wants us to work hard because he knows the keys to success! But also remembers that we're human, and not machines!"
"If you just go to his resume online you can see how much this man has achieved and truly is an icon in the sport. Love the man, but is very old so can be hard to reach with technology. Best way to contact him is by phone call or letter. Love the man, is tough as hell, but cares a lot."
"Ron had a limited knowledge of coaching and training techniques beyond distance freestyle swimmers, and the more endurance races like the 400 IM. He produced great distance swimmers, but our sprint team was less than stellar (but came in as great recruits). I'd not suggest a sprinter or stroke swimmer train under him. The team overall was great- very positive and fun teammates. Support of athletes at Seton Hall was fantastic too, and there was definitely a sense of family across all sports. I enjoyed my time as an athlete overall, just had my concerns about the head swim coach's ability to train across the sport."
