"created a better team culture than the previous coach but still had a poor environment, awful team culture, and lots of dishonesty from the coaching staff "
"I have been on campus for 2 weeks and I am already shocked by how little Coach Costello knows about pitching. When I saw that a bunch of pitchers went into the portal after last year it should have been a red flag. Unfortunately Coach Bowen talked a good game but it appears to all be false. Not only is coach Costello lacking in knowledge but he belittles the other coaches, my teammates, and former players behind their backs. He has nothing positive to say unless it’s about himself. I wonder what he’s going to say about me? Avoid this place if you are looking for a supportive positive environment. Looks like myself and the other pitchers are on our own to get better. "
"Not sure who he is coaching for. He does not seem to make the best coaching decisions, and manages his team out of wins often. Not sure if he is just a bad decision maker or just completely incompetent. Be cautious, as he will tell you what you want to hear, but his actions are completely the opposite. He does not seem to care about creating a supportive environment and shows very little pride in his program. He hires some knowledgeable staff, but their voices are squashed. Other staff are just as inept as he is. His players show success despite his ineptness. This program could be so much better."
"Poor communication. Talks about players and coaching staff to other players. Does not know anything about the sport cannot provide coaching. Cannot hold a conversation, walks away."
"Horrible, awful, disrespectful, DE-motivator, no knowledge of the sport, threatening. Just some of the words I would use to describe this coach. Threats, intimidation and bullying are the only way he engages with his athletes. "
"I had a fantastic experience with this coach.
Coach DuPaul took over the worst team in the Patriot League, by far. Before his arrival, Lafayette was 10th of 10 teams in cross country with 284 points. With no scholarships, he led Lafayette to a 3rd place finish in the Patriot League. We were 32 points away from winning the championship! This was the COVID year where Navy did not compete, Army won with 41 points and Lafayette had 73, scoring 5 athletes in the top 20.
In his 5th year, despite losing two of his top runners, Lafayette placed 4th (as Navy competed again) with 134 points. In just 5 years, Lafayette went from 10th to 3rd and 4th, improving 150 points in the league championship in a small, 10 team conference. All without scholarships.
2 years after he left, Lafayette just placed 9th with 256 points. Athlete development has halted since he left. The talented recruits that he brought in, such as a 4:08 high school miler, are not improving. The new coach is doing worse, despite having more talent on the team. It is not a coincidence that Lafayette improved so drastically once Coach DuPaul began, and not a coincidence that the team has declined so rapidly after he left."
"Coach Mike means well but is disorganized, doesn't communicate clearly, and doesn't seem to know what he's doing all the time. Our team should be better than we are."
"I ran on some of this coach's earlier teams. Maybe he has improved, but I had a challenging experience with him. He lost all of our trust in him as he would constantly complain about each of us members on the team to the other members of the team in private meetings. Of course, he would not say any of this to our faces, but it just created a toxic relationship between much of our team and him. I also heard that he said nasty things to the team about me after I graduated which was upsetting because I put a lot into the program for him and was respected by my other coaches and teammates. Our team rallied around each other and did well but I certainly wish we had had a different coach."
"This coach struggles with a high degree of the basic necessities of scholastic coaching such as caring about and putting the athletes first, communication, fostering a structured and competitive team environment, and being an educator. Not to mention he also lacks the knowledge of the sport to generate the best competitive results out of his athletes and is to vain to admit that and attempt to learn from other, more successful coaches in the sport. The results at Lafayette were misleading as they were achieved after the pandemic in which the athletes were largely away training on their own and their success had nothing to do with this coach and was about the ambition, dedication, intentionality, and locker room vibe facilitated by the athletes themselves. Worst of all, this coach makes everything about himself and suffers from "blame the kid syndrome" when things go poorly on race-day. A coach in a collegiate program owes it to their athletes, institution, and community to be a servant leader, educator, and instill skills in their athletes that can foster success both competitively and after graduation in the professional world. This coach comes up markedly short in those areas."
"Liam Bowen is a genuine, caring man. He dedicates himself to the betterment of his team, and truly cares about his players. He is successful in managing and keeping his team organized. However, there are more knowledgeable coaches. Having a knowledgeable coaching staff around him is very beneficial to the team.
He is very straight forward about his style, he wants his players to play the right way. He does not want his players to act of character at any time.
At first, I wasn’t too sure about him, but as time went on, I found him to be a genuine, funny guy that I enjoy having in our dugout."
"Coach Dupaul is pretty knowledgeable in the sport and overall a good coach. Some workouts I question on why we’re doing them or if the time is really right but for a vast majority they’re fine. He creates an emphasis on making the team closer together outside of the sport. I don’t have any real complaints other than at some points the program seems a little bit disorganized and things are put together at the last minute."
"Never spoke to the coach, never reassured parents and didn't build relationships. Played a lot of the same guys which could be why the team looked tired towards the end of the season."
"Very hypocritical and lacks transparency. Says he doesn’t care about garbage yardage then proceeds to give garbage yardage. Complains about his workload, lashes out at swimmers, lacks empathy, and is a poor communicator. Only wants to deal with the “in the pool” matters and doesn’t not want to know personal details of swimmers outside of the pool. "
"Jackie is a strong coach who was a great advocate for the women’s team. She helped the IM and backstroke groups tremendously but was not given much freedom overall by the head coach."
"Very good guy. Genuinely cares about your well-being. However, does not really create a good team culture and doesn’t really seem to know how to create fast runners."
"Pat did a great job leading both sprint and fly groups. He comes up with the most creative and individualized sets out of all coaches to focus on what his athletes need. He is very knowledgeable in technique and definitely made me a better swimmer. Unfortunately, I do not think the head coaching staff gives him the freedom/ decision making power he deserves. He is outgoing, organized, and motivational. "
"Overall Pat was in my opinion the best coach at UMBC. He was the most knowledgable about technique and taught his swimmers in a more modern way. When he lead practices he motivated his swimmers and was super passionate. I feel that Pat isn't given enough room and freedom to coach as the head coach holds him back. If the team was lead by Pat or if Pat was given more freedom to do what he thinks is right then the team would be headed in the right direction. At the moment it is not..... quality /depth wise it'll hit rock bottom in coming years. "
"Overall a coach that shouldn't be leading a team at the Division I level. Practices are not consistent with specific training for athletes. Very few swimmers were able to progress under him. Very awkward, and unable to communicate well with his team and hold swimmers and coaches accountable. Great assistant coaching staff but seems like they have no say."
"A coach that cares about his swimmers but who’s training style lacks individuality. Seems we trained for open water swimming rather than specific races that we’ve specialized in. Believes yards+aerobic ability = success but yards swimming is far past that training style. Sets are mentally draining and the sets made the training environment negative. "
"The weight room and athletic training facilities are newly renovated with many great tools for all athletes to succeed. Our locker rooms are older and are not terrible but they are very small and are hard to fit a lot of girls in. It is also a bit far from our game field. "
"Not good at communication, often not paying attention during practices, “garbage yardage”, not motivating at meets, overall disorganized. You can tell he does care about his athletes and their success but does not show it well. Training is very generic and not very individualized, felt like I didn’t see as much improvement as I should’ve. "
"I like Cocah DuPaul, he really loves coaching and has made me love track and field again. I think he does struggle a bit with creating a rigid structure for us to follow but some athletes work better with flexibility. Overall a good coach!"
"Coach Matt is very caring but has a hard time expressing himself and what he wants. Overall though his way of training is great and I couldn’t ask for a better collegiate coach. "
"He plays favorites, doesn’t value the “hard worker”, makes false promises, doesn’t like confrontation. Values power hitters and pitchers to win games. Everything else is mediocre. Team culture is more individual rather than team. Have issues with players being selfish. "
"great volleyball knowledge, coming from an ex professional volleyball player. really cares about your development as a player and as a person. different points of view than other coaches, but willing to explain them to you and create a team culture around them. a few non negotiable values, which describes our volleyball program"
"A great match field for game days. The practice field is not great but is ok. All athletes have access to the event center which is new and offers so much to the athletes. The locker rooms are decent. "
"The facilities are getting the job done but we wish we had more. As a member of the track and field team we also wish we could host a meet at some point. "
"Coach Divina is someone who has passion about throwing but her knowledge about the sport runs short just as her patience with her athletes. She carrys on her bad mood from practice to competing without knowing how to be professional. "
"We have everything that is essential for success. Absolutely fantastic grass field for soccer (women's and men’s). Everything is walking distance and easy to access. However women’s locker room for soccer is very small and has limited space. "
"She is very dedicated to coaching and always tries to make the best out of every situation. She is very creative with drills. Sometimes she has a bad mood but generally that is only if someone isn’t trying."
"The locker rooms were really small meaning that some of us were without lockers and had to change on the floor. Other than that the facilities are great"
"His workouts are pretty intense. Requires players to be in a good shape all year long. Aggressive offensive mentality. Big on passing the ball from side to side. Overall good coach with fair knowledge on the game.
Where he lacks is honesty and caring for his players. Would not recommend him as a firs choice. "
"All the facilities that men’s soccer have access too are all within a 1 minute walk. And even though we don’t have the luxuries as other schools, we have the essentials for our success. "
"Loved everything about Petey he was the coach I felt the most comfortable to talk to and had an understanding on when to be a no nonsense while also knowing when to be more personable."
"He cares a lot about the game, and especially a lot about the school. He wasn’t always as direct as players needed, but we know he cared for the most part. "
"He was our first assistant at UMBC. Took time to talk to players not only about soccer. Cares about the individual as well. Really enjoyed playing for him and think he will make a great head coach."
"He’s a great guy and he does know the game pretty well, he just doesn’t know how to relay that to the team sometimes. Amazing guy though and definitely will be a life long connection and friend. "
"He’s been nothing but kind to me, however, I feel as if he has taken a back seat to the previous head coach for too long. Now that he’s head coach, I’m expecting some changes. "
"Coach Anthony Adams is a coach who wants his team to win and who always shows up to practice with a professional attitude. Although he works hard at his job he offers little constructive criticism to improve your game and only focuses his efforts on the scholarship athletes. "
"The locker rooms down by the stadium are not the greatest in size and renovation. Anything up in the arena is up to date and great. Turf field is a little beat up but they are renovating around the stadium. "
"Although he just recently started coaching, Coach Pete has played at a very high level and understands the game. He is very easy to talk to and get along with as a coach. "
"Coach Caringi 3rd is a young and enthusiastic assistant and always expresses how he feels about what the team do well an how the team can improve. He gets involved within practices when necessary and is more attack-minded (being an ex-striker) sharing his experience on that side of the game."
"Volleyball and basketball teams have much better locker rooms and necessities than other sports. Has everything that is needed, but not much extra that you'd expect from a division 1 program. "
"Coach Anthony Adams is a great coach and person. He is someone that players feel comfortable talking to about anything from soccer to life in general. He plans practices very well and often has the team work on a variety of different areas within each session. He also does a good job of analyzing what is best for his team tactically, and creates good plans for how to exploit the opposing team's weaknesses. He is well respected by players and shows the same respect towards them."
"The locker room is small and slightly outdated and the turf needs renovating but gets the job done. The strength and conditioning gym is great and there are also good facilities in the shared training room i.e. contrast tubs and compression boots."
"Coach Anthony Adams is passionate about defending as a team and channels this throughout his coaching. His sessions are always organized and planned thoroughly involving technical work, high-intensity work, tactical improvements, and game-specific practice."
"Dishonest, not credible, empty promises! Zero accountability. No player development, no defined player roles. Does not have players best interest at heart only his! Unethical!!!etc."
"Poor coaching. Doesn’t understand the game - played with a front 4 and no midfield. Played mind games with the team and made everyone turn on each other rewarding snitching with minutes. Had a loosing record every year."
"A coach who’s the son of a coach. Comes from a coaching family and is very knowledgeable of the game. He was a 3rd team all American as a midfielder at the university of Maryland in 2003. He played 5 years for the MLL with Bayhawks, Barrage and Lizards. He was offensive coordinator/assistant coach with Navy, Maryland, and Loyola prior to head coach at UMBC. The squad does many team activities together and carries a family orientated attitude when they step out onto the field. Everyone plays for each other. Great bonds and friendships are made while competing at the highest level. A great man and leader to play for."
"Experience with numerous coaches at every level and Coach Kuhlmeyer is one of the most prepared at his craft. He puts in the hours necessary to be the best at his job."
"When it comes to producing sprinters, he's an expert. But he's not a great HC. He doesn't oversee other event groups, and plays a lot of favoritism. If you're not performing well, do not expect do not expect niceties. Very passive aggressive, and very petty. Great sprints coach, but doesn't have the tangibles of a head coach in my opinion "
"Not knowledgeable on soccer. Chooses favorites and ignores other players. Let assistant coach make a majority of the decisions. Scheduled weekly meetings in an attempt to be accessible but ended up canceling every week. Class of 2018 began with 11 players and only 2 graduated with the team, that says something about the coaching staff. "
"Loved playing for Coach Mumma. He is very accessible and easy-going. Although he takes the game seriously, he tries to keep things light and fun. If you make a mistake, he wants you to at least make that mistake playing as hard as you can. He can be unorganized at times but he cares for his players as a whole"
"Very weird guy to be honest. He talked way too openly about his dating life. He swears he looks like Vince Vaughn so we ONLY watched Vince Vaughn movies on our bus trips. If you are currently being recruited by him, be very weary of what he says. He has lied in the past about why his players transfer or only stay a few years."
"Phil would be a great salesman but he unfortunately falls short as a basketball coach. I remember him making a comment about how he rather coach baseball because he grew up playing it. He would weirdly get very angry at very random moments. We had a running joke that it must be, "that time of the month." Overall, terrible experience."
"Phil is a manipulative person. When I asked him why so many of his players transferred he lied and said it was because he was going to leave and they didn't want to play for UMBC if he wasn't there. He only runs the Princeton offense and never allowed us to fast break. His assistant coach, Carley, is similar and difficult to talk to. "
"Throughout the whole recruiting process, Phil Stern was dishonest and manipulative in what he chose to tell recruits. Including the amount of transfers he's had in the past three years. I believe Phil Stern does not care about his players and is only considered how with how he individually looks to the public. Overall the experience at UMBC was very eye-opening."
"He is manipulative and it is impossible to talk to him. His staff is even nervous to tell him what they really feel about things because he will shut them down. Not many people return after one season, and if they do have a hard time with him. He is good at drawing up plays at the end of shot clocks or game situations. Runs plays every time down the floor, there is no flow to his game, easy to scout because he wants to control every second of the game."
"Amy Slade is an amazing coach. She was an amazing player when she played at UVA. Her knowledge for the game is so elite and gets the team very eager to learn everyday at practice. Everyone of us is excited to go to practice the next day to see the new and creative drills Amy has made. She is always at the field helping us work on areas of our game that are struggling. She wants us all to achieve greatness because we truly have tremendous talent on our UMBC team."
"Coach DuPaul was the lone bright spot among the Lafayette coaching staff. He always had a positive attitude and went the extra mile to support athletes in other events. Even though I was a thrower and he coached the distance team, he always talked to us and cheered us up. He was well respected by everyone.
The angry kid below is probably one of the troublemakers that everyone on the team disliked.
"
"At Lafayette, Coach DuPaul turned the worst team in the Patriot League into one of the top teams in the league. It was a transformation that none of us thought could happen because we were so far behind the other teams.
We ran bigger PR times and stayed healthier compared to schools we competed against. We were consistently beating athletes from other teams that were a lot faster than us in high school.
He improved the team culture by making small changes over time. Changing it all at once wouldn't have worked. Over time we grew more passionate about the sport and now more than half of us that he coached are running marathons after college."
"Has a lot of time to be there for his athlete and does care for their success. Needs more intensity to form motivation. Would also help with controlling his athletes. Too much flexibility mostly occurring because lack of effective communication. "
"I think Coach Dupaul is very dedicated and cares a lot about his athletes and this program. He is extremely flexible and easy to get along with, which works better for some and not so well for others. I do think the team could benefit from a little more structure and organization, and I also think Dupaul needs to be more vocal about the team culture and mentality he expects from us. Seeing as how he has only been coaching here for a little less than a year, I think he will develop his coaching style here with time."
"She wasn’t able to lead a team with her coaching staff and has been playing mind games with the team. Was not completely honest during the recruiting process.
Often seemed like she did not wanted to work with the team during practices.
She was very convinced that her way of letting the team play was always correct and was not open to any kind of input. The fittest players would play the most who were not necessarily the most skilled players."
