"Creates a stale environment that causes players' growth to plateau. Continuously brought in and played 5th years over well-deserving players who had been on the team for years. Does not know how to develop a team and relies on the transfer portal. He only conducts the same 5 drills at practice and rarely scrimmages, making every day/season repetitive. Will not be upfront or honest and repeatedly strung players along for a season and even years until it was too late to transfer. Has obvious favorites and will only be respectful to players if he needs them. Does not have extensive knowledge on the game and will often answer questions with "it's situational" - most of our team successes came from the leadership of captains and upperclassmen on the field. Was very catfishing during recruiting and made a lot of promises he could not keep. Players on the team are fantastic and made my time here enjoyable and worth staying for."
"Lacks the ability to communicate with players. Only cares about the favorites. Will not have a conversation with player on what they need to do to get better. Instead tells players, "if you need to ask, I don't need to tell you." Is not honest in recruiting, tells players what they want to hear so they commit. Lacks control of the team off the ice, and creates a terrible team environment. Turning girls against each other. "
"UNH has been very lucky to have held on to him for over a decade. He has been very successful and has done so with class and integrity. His teams always compete at the very top of the conference and excel in the classroom. It would be very difficult to match what he has done. "
"Absolutely atrocious . Understands the game but incapable of relaying that info - which is critical for quality coaching . Abusive to players and thin skinned so cuts down anyone who bruises his ego . Has kicked players off the team because of it - so either placate his abusive culture or lose your spot . "
"Had parents come in to his office every week that would complain about playing time then they would instantly start/ get more playing time. Did not care about injuries would assume you were lying about being injured/ would still try to start people who were injured depending on the injury. Would act like he cared about players but when he would ask a question about you he wouldn’t even listen to your response. He would act cool with you around other people but as soon as you had a 1 on 1 meeting with him he would tear your entire life apart whether it was about soccer, school, you as a person, your health/ mental health etc. Very obvious who is favorites on the team are he would have random personal meeting with them during the week or before/after practice. The drills he does are very repetitive, some drills were good but others he would make up and they didn’t make a lot of sense and he would spend 1-1.5 hours on the same drill at practice. The assistant coaches don’t really have a day at all they just go with what steve says, sometimes assistant coaches and head coach would often contradict each other. The team was very cliquey which had a lot to do with the head coach as well. He would very much separate the starters and non starters and it would create a lot of drama. Overall, he was a completely different person from meeting him for a visit to actually committing and going there. "
"Do not go to UNH to play mens basketball it’s not worth the free scholarship. This tyrant is an egotistical, narcissist who mistreats his players. He caused many young men to suffer in silence. He’s a bully, and if you go to speak with him privately, he will reveal your discussion later in front of a whole team. This man has coached way to long, and is a paranoid self serving lunatic. Why he has one year left on his contract and UNH chose to keep him is beyond anyones understanding. Watch him pace up and down the sideline, he’s afraid to lose and fails to communicate with his assistants and players. Worst of the worst! "
"Poor communication, never expressed why someone was out of the lineup. Never explained why players roles changed. Loved certain players that were starters but she didn’t care about the middle/ bottom end players. Often would walk by injured players in hall etc and not even say hello. "
"Coach hubbard takes a more relaxed and trustworthy approach to coaching. He is not going to motivate you to go to war, but he is always prepared, approachable, and has an incredibly good grasp over his players. A strong man manager who puts the team first and genuinely cares for his players. A winner. "
"After a successful field hockey career at UNH (4 yr starter), I'll always wonder if I could have been better... if I wasn't so constantly miserable playing for a coach that lead by intimidation and fear. Once you graduate, youre pushed to believe that it was worth it, but that stress and sense of inferiority is not worth anything. "
"This coach was very bad about showing his favorites. If you weren't one of his favorites you might as well not even come to practice cause you'd be treated the same way. This coach is very smart about a few track events and has no knowledge about other events yet tries to control all events. "
"Good coach who knows what he is talking about. Fair dealing with players but does the right thing for the program to progress. He is the coach and wants the best for the team. Emphasis on team."
"very good coach, a little old school but understands the game. lets his assistants manage most of the game and recruit but is there to oversee all operations, treats teams like family"
"Coach Welham is the second coach I have played for at UNH and feel lucky to be a player under him. He didn't recruit me, but treats us all with respect and wants the best for us as athletes and people beyond athletics"
"I was a four year starter, and once I was done with field hockey, I truly realized all the flaws in what she put us through. I love UNH, but there was a lot of stress for an 18 year-old. I now realize the motives, but do not agree with the approach."
"Playing soccer at UNH has truly shaped my college experience and I feel fortunate to have a coach that wants the best for all his players, on and off the field."
"Will not play you unless you’re a favorite. Creates and fuels a toxic team environment. Only cares about his reputation and winning. I played soccer my entire life and he made me hate the sport. Many girls quit the team because of him."
