"I hope that Lilli has matured as a person and coach since my time swimming a few years ago, however, my experience with her was terrible and I cannot recommend that anyone goes here to swim in good conscience. Even if it is free. Lilli played extreme favorites and created a culture where bullying was acceptable. She treated people like me who were struggling with disabilities, mental illnesses, severe medical issues, or injuries as lesser. During my time swimming at URI, multiple people quit the team and I considered it many times. My own medical issues were never understood or accommodated and the bullying that I experienced from teammates was never addressed even after it was brought to the attention of the coaches. I experienced bullying along with both verbal and psychological abuse, which took years to recover from. As a swim coach, Lilli was not successful and never took feedback. She did not know how to taper or cater to different athletes. There was no plan for the season's training and it showed. To her credit, she is very knowledgeable about breaststroke and very capable at coaching breaststrokers. But, being able to coach one stroke is not enough to build a team. Our team was not competitive in the A-10 conference and many athletes got worse while only a few improved. While we had a decent record winning meets, we did not go against the same caliber of teams as those in the A-10 so it should not be used as a marker for success. We were last or second to last 3 out of 4 years at conferences, and this trend continues. I hope that Lilli no longer treats her athletes like this, has learned to successfully coach all athletes to help them improve, and has learned to create a better team culture. However, I wish I could go back in time and choose to swim anywhere else. I hope no one ever has to experience what I went through. She was a great swimmer, but that does not make her a great coach or person. "

"I was not recruited by Coach Whitney but had the opportunity to play for her. I agree she is “old school” meaning she expects the most out of her players and understands the importance of her team “buying in.” Some complain about the coaching during at bats, but as a player I feel that’s how we were able to make adjustments mid-at bat, when other teams weren’t able to. If she sees something that can be adjusted, she makes a comment, and it really helps! When you’re not coachable or under prepared, if feels like a critique or attack, rather than support and encouragement. I’ve been reading these anonymous posts and it shocks me how two people can view the same exact situation and look at it complete differently. Never once did I feel coach Whitney’s words or actions were abusive. Whenever she held us accountable, the ones who rebelled or the ones who constantly made excuses always found a way to flip blame onto Coach. During the recruiting process I was told that Coach Whitney is constantly looking to help her players grow. To see complaints about making adjustments with the swing just goes to show how uncoachable some of my teammates were. They had the “if it’s not broke don’t fix it” mentality at the D1 level. Isn’t that crazy? Imagine getting mad at your coach for helping you improve your swing? I had a great overall experience with coach. Her and her family were nothing but welcoming to ALL of us, regardless of how coach Whitney was treated by some players. I didn’t always have my family around and I couldn’t always make it home for holidays so this meant a lot to me. She is a coach beyond the field and cares about her players so much. "

"My daughter just informed me that coach Whitney resigned from URI. As I searched for the article I came across this site. I just have to say, I am blown away at some of the comments and posts. But I’m also happy to see that several comments captured who Coach Whitney is as a person and as a coach pretty accurately. It’s very clear that some people have no business playing D1 softball. Coach is arguable one or the best players to ever play in the Atlantic 10, and her coaching history speaks for itself. What she did in one year as an interim at Amherst College was very impressive. Followed by a great career at WPI. I see several comments referencing the “hazing” incident. What they all failed to mention is the university found absolutely no wrongdoing on coach Whitney’s behalf, as well as her family. Her and her family have been know to open up their homes to the teams, to create a family-like environment. And trust me, I looked into this incident EXTENSIVELY before sending my daughter to play for coach Whitney. If you actually took the time to read about the case, apparently the team was enjoying a fun day at Whitney’s family’s home when one of the girls slipped and fell into the pool and was injured. She claimed that an upperclassman pushed her, which I’m not sure of the details there, but I can assure you I’ve seen this happen a ton of times at team parties over the years, and my instinct as a parent would never be to blame the coach, or classify it as “hazing.” I agree with previous comments that coach Whitney lives and breathes softball. Based on our experiences, this is very true. She is very organized, disciplined, and expects the same from her players. After hearing about many of the ins and outs as a parent of a player, pretty clear who’s writing these messages and it’s also clear how much is exaggerated and a lot of what I’ve read is just blatant lies. Ironically, the ones complaining are the ones who didn’t get the playing time they wanted. If you Google Coach Whitney’s name, you’ll also read articles about the multiple programs she’s turned around as a head coach. Every program she’s coached improved significantly during her tenure. It’s really sad to see players and parents who could hack it get on a public forum and try to portray something that is so far from the truth. And I feel compelled to say something about the “abuse” allegations. As a coach, using the term “square between the eyes with accountability” is NOT threatening to hit a player in the face. I agree with other comments that the claims are comical. Did my daughter get all the playing time she wanted? No! Did she have difficult times throughout college? Yes! So does pretty much every college student. My daughter saw first hand how players would just jump on the bandwagon even when claims were not true. And she found this to be very concerning and spoke to me about what her teammates were doing, all out of spite. I didn’t believe a lot of it until I actually really read this page. I am not saying Coach Whitney is perfect, no coach is, but she was an incredible leader, role model, and support for my daughter. I know how much it meant to her that coach Whitney and her family opened up their home to the team and to see their kindness and generosity thrown back in their face is so sad to see, especially as a parent. Based on what my daughter has shared, it was very clear that there were some players that had no business playing D1 softball, but Whitney inherited the team and did everything she could to have them “buy in”. She was big on that. And unfortunately some players lacked respect, discipline, and in some cases the skill needed to play at that level. What we witnessed was pure retaliation from players who weren’t happy and weren’t getting the playing time they wanted. I’m so sad to see it come to this. Our family really hopes to see coach Whitney coach again somewhere where she is appreciated and valued. "

"Whitney has dedicated her life to the game of softball. She is incredibly knowledgable, experienced, and has high expectations, which, is in fact, everything an athlete could want in a coach if they want to play at a high level. As I read through these posts, it looks highly sensationalized. The complaints posted sounds *nothing* like Whitney as a coach or person. She holds herself and her position as a coach to a high standards. She eats, sleeps, and breathes softball. Being a parent, you always want to defend your child, and that is super justifiable; however, you also have to accept your child's capabilities and limitations. Sometimes parents and/or their child aren't ready for D1, and that's okay, but you have to accept that and figure out other options that fit you best. I didn't love my D1 experience (admittedly, I probably wasn't ready for D1) but was it good for me? ABSOLUTELY!!! There was a time where my dad had written a letter to our coach, and never sent it. I handled it myself and learned hard skills like assertive communication, and speaking up for yourself, which is what I wish more players could do these days, rather than having their parents fight their battles that they weren't prepared for (ie. how to handle adversity and conflict when you leave home). So now there are bitter parents and players coming on here to take down a really exceptional person, coach, mom, and wife, ....and her parents?!?! It sounds to me like the players who Whitney inherited are upset and throwing a fit because Whitney was trying to improve the level of softball at URI, much like she tried to at WPI, which is not what they signed up for; they signed up to play mediocre softball and didn't want to grow or be challenged. Whitney is one of the most passionate and professional coaches I have known. I would want my daughter to play for and learn from her, because I have taught my daughter that in order to get better at something, you have to work really hard, and be coachable. Both things that you need at this level. "

"It’s becoming comical reading these posts. Anyone who knows Whitney, her coaching staff, and her family knows she is a great asset to our game and coaching field. She is professional, organized, sees someone’s full potential, and holds them accountable. Her successful playing and coaching career speak for itself. Playing time isn’t equal, throwing balls away every other throw doesn’t equate to playing time. Being late to practices with self centered attitudes and the ability not to be consistent day to day doesn’t warrant this disgusting page. If pitchers can’t hit their spots and/or throw strikes with precision and movement, that doesn’t grant playing time. Please move on, maybe you should speak to your children about working harder, becoming better humans and softball players, and you as the parent should stay out of it. "The woman is very knowledgeable for the game of softball and what it should take to win. However, in every other aspect she falls incredibly short. The only preparation that is involved in program's run like this is learning how to deal with a bad boss. There are obvious mind games and blatant favoritism played on a daily basis. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as professional softball, and with that being said this is the end of the line. While winning is important, the biggest thing at this level is guiding and giving the girls tools and lessons to succeed past this sport. Under this regime, there is no growing as a person, a good work ethic is not refined, and doing the right thing is not important. "Whit is not the person she appears to be before you play for her! She is everything the other reviews have said. Look up the lawsuit from WPI and then imagine the AD at URI hiring her anyway. Now we are in the same boat. Awaiting the results of an abusive coaching investigation that was brought to the university by close to 20 current and former players. There is actually a text from Whit verifying wanting to punch a player between the eyes. The body shaming, constant demeaning, the blame on players for every loss without ever looking in a mirror at her own coaching is exhausting. She can't figure out why girls that hit bombs in travel can't hit on her team...but when you get to school she tells you to forget your own swing you've worked on for 10 years and "chop wood". Yup, like kids learn when they are 7 if they pop up! That is how you must hit, so no one hits real well. She also coaches your swing between EVERY pitch during a game from 3rd base. The ESPN announcers have actually made fun of her for it, saying things like "Wow, Coach Goldstein is coaching these girls every pitch! I have never seen a D1 coach do such a thing" and "Maybe she should leave this for practice instead of games". She does NOT coach on any type of pitch selection, and there is ZERO preparation for the teams that are being facing. She also calls pitches even though she has never pitched. She is terrible at this and it often results in the opposition getting hits on 2 strikes bc she just keeps throwing the same pitch. If you are considering playing for her talk to ppl, Google search and be ready for going from loving the game to hating it. Her coaching style is like the military where she breaks you down and you have to build yourself back up. Do not expect much in the way of compliments or even a "good job". Good luck with players being favored and those that are favored are so bc they run to her and tell her everything. Those are the girls that get playing time and are not publicly shamed all the time. Don't believe me? Look at the 1st baseman's stats for the 2024 season. Her batting average is a joke but she played almost every game and every inning. Others that can play 1st weren't even given a chance no matter how terrible she did bc she is one of caoch's besties. Worst experience ever!!!!!"

"Coach Goldstein did not recruit my daughter, because she came in after the initial coaching staff was let go. My daughter had to prove to coach that she was a Division I athlete. Coach Whit plays to win, and that’s the level my daughter wanted to play at. The campus, the area, is just beautiful. The experience coach Whit has given my daughter has made her a stronger female, and is preparing her to compete in the job market. The standards that Coach Whit has and the passion she has for Rhody softball is fantastic. Parents beware! Helicopter parents are not fit for D I athletics. Everyone is good at this level! Coach Whit knows this level! "

"Whitney has rebuilt the program over the last 3 years. She brought the program from a losing program to one that set records taking the team to the A10 tournament for the first time in 13 years. . While there were some things that may have made us irritated as parents , I imagine that happens with all coaches. She can be tough but she knows softball and improved the program. We do truly believe she cares about the athletes but she is not a hand holder. When my daughter took concerns to Whitney- she always came away feeling like the issues were addressed. The facilities have also greatly improved over the last 3 years-attention was given to the softball field as well as indoor practice space and locker rooms- which were not in great shape prior to Whitney’s arrival. "

"It has been an extremely unfortunate experience for our player and we have watched as she has deteriorated emotionally, physically and in softball over the past years that Whitney has coached. Whitney came to URI already having a past history of abuse, cover up, hazing. When she was coaching for WPI, the school, Whitney, her husband, her mother and her father were all named in a suit for a severe hazing accident that resulted in a career ending injury as well as a very large out of court settlement. It's reported that the settlement was above 1 million dollars. UI was aware of this and hired her anyhow. For our part, there's really no describing the type of agetation that she creates on her team, between teammates, encouraging and giving favor to people who Tell on there teammates, withholding a food as punishment, body shaming and much more. This is by far the most hostile environment our athlete has ever been in. The assistant coaches join in on the belittling, berating, public humiliation, body shaming, intimidation... Players are not fed properly at all and our daughter has been sick multiple times due to this. If you have any type of disease or food allergy or anything like that you are 100% on your own and in most cases need to provide your own food while traveling as well as anytime there is a team event. Whitney threatened to punch a player in the face, saying, I am so angry, I could punch you in the face right now. She's regularly known for throwing tantrums and kicking multiple athletes out of practice with no explanation at all. It's a very sad situation with this coaching staff and definitely criminally abusive on so many levels. Please do your homework before sending your athlete to play under this coach. At the end of this season 75% of her players were seeking mental health counseling. Buyer beware, don't be fooled by her. Also, facilities are terrible, especially dorms. There are multitudes of pictures out there showing black water coming out of the faucets, trash everywhere in your rooms when you move in, there are no special dorms at all or accommodations for softball players, the shower water is known to turn blonde hair green. Illness is rampant for anybody that lives in a dorm. Just terrible. We do not recommend playing for any of the coaches on the staff. Players have been left for days with concussions, vomiting, forced back to play while they're still injured. All of this is supported by mental health department as well as the medical facility doctors including the chief of medicine for University of Rhode Island. Reports have been made for 3 years now and have not been responded to you by the AD's office. "

"The experience that was had by multiple players on the 2021-24 teams over several years, was nothing short of traumatic. Uncaring, untrustworthy, constantly pitting players against each other, traumatizing comments, temper tantrums, curses at players, belittles, degrades, body shames, encourages tattling on your teammates in order to get brownie points and favoritism, sets team captains up to carry out her abusive agenda, threatened to slug a player between their nose and their forehead, calls players disgusting and that she can't stand them, makes players rank other teammates on how bought in they are to her brand and program, public humiliation and so many other things. Whitney does not provide proper meals during travel and games, players often only getting two meals a day and sometimes one of those meals only consists of a smoothie. Players are given between $5 and $15 for 1-2 meals at the airport while traveling. We do not suggest anyone play for her. She was named in a lawsuit for a severe hazing incident at WPI that she orchestrated and that her parents and husband participated in AND ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE COVER-UP OF THAT HAZING INCIDENT. Incident ended in the player being severely injured. The school (WPI) and her parents were sued, and Whitney and her husband Matt were named in the suits as well WPI WAS SUED. It was settled out of court for a very large sum of money. URI hired her knowing that she participated in the hazing incident and cover up, with this information and knowledge and nothing has changed about what she's doing. She did not learn anything from that experience. Absolutely abusive, old school style coaching with very little coaching actually going on. She believes in breaking kids down like they're in the military to build them up to be loyal only to her and fear her versus respect her. Lots of drama, very sporadic broken coaching, pitching coach tells the players to look up spins and different pitches and spins on Google or YouTube because she does not know how to teach them. Horrible experience for many athletes unfortunately. These athletes have now come together and come forward however and they are in the process of reporting the staff starting with Whitney. The complaint process began in March of 2024 which includes doctors, psychologist and well over 10 athletes. Meetings to hear specific incidences and reports begin on May 6, 2024. Anyone looking to play at University of Rhode Island should do your homework before you send your child there. Also, facilities and dorms are absolutely terrible. Many dorms do not even have clean water. The bathrooms are cesspools. Food is decent, professors are excellent overall. Compliance has been very helpful The AD's office has swept these complaints under the carpet for 3 years now. That will not be happening this year. These complaints are moving forward in the school will either respond to them or families intend on taking this to legal platform. "

"I hope that Lilli has matured as a person and coach since my time swimming a few years ago, however, my experience with her was terrible and I cannot recommend that anyone goes here to swim in good conscience. Even if it is free. Lilli played extreme favorites and created a culture where bullying was acceptable. She treated people like me who were struggling with disabilities, mental illnesses, severe medical issues, or injuries as lesser. During my time swimming at URI, multiple people quit the team and I considered it many times. My own medical issues were never understood or accommodated and the bullying that I experienced from teammates was never addressed even after it was brought to the attention of the coaches. I experienced bullying along with both verbal and psychological abuse, which took years to recover from. As a swim coach, Lilli was not successful and never took feedback. She did not know how to taper or cater to different athletes. There was no plan for the season's training and it showed. To her credit, she is very knowledgeable about breaststroke and very capable at coaching breaststrokers. But, being able to coach one stroke is not enough to build a team. Our team was not competitive in the A-10 conference and many athletes got worse while only a few improved. While we had a decent record winning meets, we did not go against the same caliber of teams as those in the A-10 so it should not be used as a marker for success. We were last or second to last 3 out of 4 years at conferences, and this trend continues. I hope that Lilli no longer treats her athletes like this, has learned to successfully coach all athletes to help them improve, and has learned to create a better team culture. However, I wish I could go back in time and choose to swim anywhere else. I hope no one ever has to experience what I went through. She was a great swimmer, but that does not make her a great coach or person. "

"URI located in the beautiful regions of Rhode Island, I visited there for track and field, and the campus was great along with the suburban scenery. You do need a car however to get most places, but other than that the campus environment is welcoming."
