"My experience with Coach Whitney Goldstein was deeply troubling and, unfortunately, far from the supportive and respectful environment that college athletics should foster. While she often presents herself to parents and recruits as a caring and committed coach, my experience and that of many others tells a very different story. Whitney Goldstein frequently demeaned players with comments such as, “You all f***ing disgust me,” and, “You shouldn’t be able to sleep looking at yourself in the mirror.” This language was not only inappropriate, but it also contributed to a toxic environment that damaged team morale and individual mental health. Beyond verbal abuse, there were serious concerns about violations of federal FERPA regulations and the University of Rhode Island’s codes of conduct. Additionally, certain actions and statements made by Whitney Goldstein toward specific players raised clear concerns of homophobia and racism. These behaviors prompted 17 individuals to come forward alongside legal counsel to report and challenge her conduct… and she resigned the day of the decision! Contrary to the narrative that criticism of Whitney Goldstein in other posts stems solely from players upset over playing time, I can speak for myself in saying that playing time was not the issue. My concern was about being treated with basic human dignity and respect both as a player and as a person. Unfortunately, Coach Goldstein consistently failed to provide that. We were young women, 18 to 22, looking for leadership, guidance, and trust. Instead, we were met with hostility and manipulation that turned us against one another and damaged our love for the game. No coach especially one entrusted with the development of young women should be permitted to lead in this manner. This woman should never be able to be a figure in a young woman’s life. Not as a coach and definitely not as a person"

"Positive, Develops. Cares about person, student, athlete. Staff stayed at work to listen to my daughter’s presentation that she had the next day to allow her to practice in front of an audience. Beautiful holiday dinners, hosted home dinners, goal setting, community engagement, team building activities. To my knowledge she also championed the new branding in the women’s locker room area, along with all major upgrades the program has received the last few years, which hasn’t happened in decades. Program was elevated under her. Staff was dedicated, committed, and were true community members. "

Gave many opportunities of growth to help with resumes, learn about financial literacy, and many other off field a**s to help in life and the field. Cares about academics, which some of my teammates thought was odd, but I think a coach should care about us more than just softball. Hosted dinners, holiday gatherings, community service, encouraged us to support other athletic programs and community initiatives. If you wanted to put in the extra work and do what was being asked, then you’d understand there was a staff trying to elevate the program and create a winning environment."

"I hope that Lilli has matured as a person and coach since my time swimming a few years ago, however, my experience with her was terrible and I cannot recommend that anyone goes here to swim in good conscience. Even if it is free. Lilli played extreme favorites and created a culture where bullying was acceptable. She treated people like me who were struggling with disabilities, mental illnesses, severe medical issues, or injuries as lesser. During my time swimming at URI, multiple people quit the team and I considered it many times. My own medical issues were never understood or accommodated and the bullying that I experienced from teammates was never addressed even after it was brought to the attention of the coaches. I experienced bullying along with both verbal and psychological abuse, which took years to recover from. As a swim coach, Lilli was not successful and never took feedback. She did not know how to taper or cater to different athletes. There was no plan for the season's training and it showed. To her credit, she is very knowledgeable about breaststroke and very capable at coaching breaststrokers. But, being able to coach one stroke is not enough to build a team. Our team was not competitive in the A-10 conference and many athletes got worse while only a few improved. While we had a decent record winning meets, we did not go against the same caliber of teams as those in the A-10 so it should not be used as a marker for success. We were last or second to last 3 out of 4 years at conferences, and this trend continues. I hope that Lilli no longer treats her athletes like this, has learned to successfully coach all athletes to help them improve, and has learned to create a better team culture. However, I wish I could go back in time and choose to swim anywhere else. I hope no one ever has to experience what I went through. She was a great swimmer, but that does not make her a great coach or person. "
