"This guy coached me almost 20 years ago! He does not recognize talent or have the ability to put players in situations to succeed. Terrible judgement on players. Does not take the time to develop players. He is not a motivational coach or a coach that brings the best out of his players. He has "favorites" in regards to players. This guy said I wasn't "Athletic" enough to play college football for his reason on not giving me more playing time when I played for him. I was 6'4...185 pounds catching one-handed TDs against our defensive starters though lol. I moved to Florida, which is arguably the best state in football that produces the best players, and walked on to D2 college team! I wasn't athletic enough to play for him, but I was athletic enough to make a D2 college roster as a walk-on in Florida! Make it make sense?! I ended up getting Professional opportunities getting invited to several CFL mini-camps, AFL camps, and played 3 years of Professional Arena Football. This guy is a complete joke!"
"Guy no call no showed me for a meeting. Was left sitting in his office for 40 minutes. Then went on to ignore the fact that he missed said meeting. (At the time I was a potential player/ needless to say I didn’t want to play for his team after this). Seems like this is the type of guy you’ll get with him- very concerned with self. Not much of a team guy. Lasted less than one season for SNC- I obviously wasn’t the only person to think poorly of him. "
"Coach Opgenorth was dedicated to trying to change the football program during a tumultuous time, taking over during Covid. An dedicated recruiter and coach who cared deeply about making connections with the athletes and their families. "
"He came into a difficult program first of all right in the heart of covid. He was honest and a good coach for our son his senior year(he went on the Johns Hopkins as a grad transfer) "
"Dan has been an adaptive, motivating, and organized coach for the years that I've played at Oberlin thus far. He is always willing to meet with his players and listen to any comments or concerns that can benefit the team. Dan believes in positive reinforcement and he uses constructive criticism to better our play."
"Works hard. The passion is there. However I did feel there he kept a certain separation between himself and his players. Almost an invisible wall that prevented any of us from establishing a genuine relationship with the guy. "
"He's the best coach I've ever played for in like all ways for real. Made a couple questionable decisions in games but always owned up to his mistakes and held himself and other people accountable for their actions."
"She is definitely very goal oriented and will work hard with the team to achieve the goals, no matter how long it takes. She claims to be understanding but sometimes when you approach her with a problem (an injury, an issue with another player, etc) she will give a lacksidasicle answer or simply brush it off. "
"She has good intentions but they don't always come across the right way. It takes time to understand her and persistence to achieve something that you want. She is also very one track minded and does not like to veer from this, which is not always a bad thing. "
"Says some really weird things but knows the game well. Not good with his words and pretty easy to excite but also easy to please. Overall an above average but not great coach. "
"Harsh but fair, expects our very best, which is what we all want to give him. Very focused around winning games and making sure we get the little things right."
"Will tell six different kids six different lineups. Will tell you you're going to start one week but you aint gunna start. Will talk trash about every player on the team to every other player on the team. Will never be straight up on what you need to do to make the lineup. Will play favorites harder than you're step dad did. "
"As a sprinter, I've had less interactions with Ray than many of the distance/cross country people have. I think it's fairly odd how separate he seems from the sprinters (except our national qualifiers.) He was very disconnected in the recruiting process and was similarly disconnected throughout my experience on the team."
"Good coach overall: despite being intimidating looking, he's easy to talk to and is close with the team. He knows what he's talking about and gears each practice toward what's essential to our next game. He also knows how to keep soccer fun, throwing in at least one fun practice a week to remind players why we play soccer in the first place."
"A very nice guy who cares a lot about his team and is always looking for ways to help them improve. Not always the best advice with regards to the game itself but he always puts in 100% of his effort. Very professional on and off the field. "
"Ray is very intense and clearly an effective coach but he really chooses favorites and can create an unhealthy environment in the way he has teammates report to him about each other. That said, he hasn't affected me much because I'm not a distance runner. The coaches for all other events have all been amazing though."
"Good man, needs to be more open with players and willing to get to know, so players can feel truly comfortable voicing opinions and having good, productive conversations."
"Feel like he doesn't care about his players, almost seems like he hates his Job at times. Plays favorites and can be a douche to people he doesn't like. But with that said very knowlegible guy who wants to build a program and has been at successful ones in the past."
"DP is supportive of your athletics and helping you accomplish the most you can, but more importantly he is extremely supportive off the field as well - helping you accomplish your academic goals as well. He is very approachable."
"Ray is not the kind of coach that I expected from Oberlin. He is definitely knowledgable but he treats people very differently so that only some team members are able to benefit from his leadership. I've never felt like we've had any real connection. He can be way too intense sometimes. He does not foster a happy team environment. "
"Ray is an extremely intelligent and honest man. He is very understanding and does what he can to make sure you are getting what you need from him as a coach. He can certainly be intense but only if you want him to be/if he thinks you will thrive from it. He also is a very good life coach and has given me some phenomenological advice. Ray is Amazing"
"Dan is overall a very good coach. He knows the game and understands how to coach a female team. Though sometimes communication isn't his strong suit, he is very open to discussion and will respond honestly and directly to any criticism or concern. I've had a very good experience playing soccer and Oberlin college under Dan."
"Coach Rau is the worst coach I've ever had. She does not help players reach their full potential, and she will often give up on the team when she feels frustrated. She is unapproachable when players have a problem, and she is dishonest when it comes to playing time. I would not recommend playing for Rau if you want enjoy playing volleyball. "
"She comes off nice at first, but this is so fake. She is only nice to her favorite player. She loves the game, but does not give this love to her players. She's not very genuine and is extremely closed minded. "
"Half of the kids in my class ended up transferring.
Had a sort of intensity that turned athletes away rather than motivating them.
Waited until the end of the offseason to notify athletes that they wouldn't be reinstated. "
"Erica does not know how to connect to her players as athletes or people and lacks fundamental coaching skills. She does not motivate our team nor is she honest about playing time. "
"Coach Grossman is great both on and off the field. He runs his practices with efficiency and gets his players a lot of reps. He cares about the guys on the team and is always there for them if they need help or a job recommendation letter. During practice he works with the goalies while the offensive and defensive coaches work with their units."
"Dan is not the most knowledgeable about soccer, but for what he lacks he tries to make up for by providing a positive outlet for his players. At times he is not the most agreeable, but his support and confidence in his players is unwavering. Training is not exactly challenging at times, but he works with the team to make sure that it is appropriate for how tired we are. Overall, he is very geared towards focusing on what will benefit the team and players most."
"Coach seemed to have a poor understanding of the game hindering the team's ability to perform at their best. Coach unable to create effective strategies and make appropriate adjustments during games leading to a lack of success on the football field. Would run the same unsuccessful plays repeatedly and would not substitute underperforming players. Too much reliance on embarrassing novelty, trick plays.
Coach appeared to have little interest in developing players. There were complaints from players about not receiving the support and coaching necessary to improve skills and abilities in preparation for the next season.
The coach's poor communication skills engendered a lack of trust and respect from both players and parents. Players complained that they were not supported by the coach, creating a toxic environment detrimental to the team's cohesiveness. Players witnessed Coach screaming at his staff at halftime and after games. Coach rarely attended team/parent events and rarely spoke to parents after games. Seemed more interested in catching a plane and flying to Florida or California for recruiting junkets.
The coach's recruiting over-representations caused frustration for players who felt duped about the football program and available team/school opportunities.
Overall, too much ego. Not ready for HC position.
